One Of Those Things We Experience As Farmers.

Every business has its risk and unforeseen heartbreaking moment and that includes farming, in fact you need to be very strong at heart if you must go into farming because losses are inevitable in this venture.

What you see in my cover image is a lush green land looking fresh and ready for cultivation..smiles. what if I told you that cassava was planted in that very land you're looking at but have been harvested by unknown thieves.

Someone would just wake up and decide to steal from others because they feel no one is watching and that they would never be found out. Anyways, this shocking sight was discovered in my recent visit to the farm. As I approached I knew something was off from a distance, the cassava was gone.

I had to keep my curiosity and anger to myself till I got to the farm at least the farm guard/worker would have an explanation for what has happened. I didn't meet him on getting to the farm, I wasn't too surprised because I told him I would be coming over and that was when he told me he would be taking his wife to the town for treatment.

So I kept my cool hoping before I finished the business of the day at the farm he would show up. Friends, I finished what I came to the farm to do and started calling this man on the phone, a Fulani man anyways, this is not to embarrass any tribe, I'm just trying to narrate the whole story.... I called and called till his line went off and couldn't reach him anymore.

There were so many things I wanted to ask, the chicken that died in the well and had rotten for days and a whole lot of missing chicken which seemed to me to have been sold off, the bushy environment and most importantly the cassava that were harvested. I thought it was just a low battery problem from his end but I was wrong even after many days up till the time of making this post, we can't still reach him...he is gone!

So now, this whole thing left us thinking, could he be the one who did all these things, of course we know he is capable of doing this but we can't blindly accuse him when we didn't catch him, but what would you have me us think or conclude on when he is nowhere to be found to give answers to these many questions on our minds.

Interestingly he left the bigger animals untouched, like the pigs, sheep and goats, maybe he had plans for them as well but could not execute just in time. My coming around might have disrupted the whole plan. But then we are grateful that the damage and loss were not what we couldn't bear.

We had to sell the pigs and some other animals and bring the rest home where they can be properly monitored. Now I'm not accusing this man of anything but can you give me strong reasons why you think he left without a goodbye the same morning we were supposed to meet him in the farm? Who is supposed to give an account of the missing cassava if not him... Could he be that he stole all of these things and ran away with his family to avoid questioning?

Anyways, these are some of those things that farmers go through, especially farmers that live far from their farm. I've seen and heard of many of these things, should I begin to talk about a man close to us whose worker harvested all the mature and marketable cucumber, loaded it in a commercial vehicle and ran away with it...

I cant even begin to recount...we thank that the loss didn't break us. Here we are standing tall and strong. The courage my boss showed in this period is worth emulating... He is of the opinion that nothing is worth killing yourself over in this life, anything lost can always be regained.

I rest my case guys!
