Protecting Our Remaining Forests: Why It Matters to Our Future
Greetings, Steemit community!
I'm glad to share with you my article about why protecting our remaining forests is critical to our planet’s future as well as humanity itself. As forests have always been called the lungs of the earth that play a huge role in regulating the global climate. Also, they hold a vast amount of biodiversity which cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. But unfortunately, we see them under threat around the world more than ever before.
Why Our Remaining Forests Matter:
Our remaining forests make up approximately 30 percent of the Earth’s land surface, yet they are vanishing at an accelerating pace. However, the importance of primary forest goes much further than timber or land.
(1) Forests Help in Climate Regulation: They act as huge Carbon sink absorbing billions tonnes of CO2 every year.
(2) Forests are Biodiversity Hotspot: 80% amphibian, 75 % bird & 68% mammals species on land found here.
(3) Livelihoods & Culture: Around 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their daily sustenance through food, fuels, etc., which also includes countless indigenous communities.
Major Threats
Despite increased global awareness, many factors contribute to deforestation:
(1) Industrial agriculture: For cattle ranching, palm oil and soy production.
(2) Illegal logging: Timber exploitation that has adverse impacts on fragile environments and developing countries.
(3) Infrastructure Development: Expanding road networks, mining operations and urbanisation are breaking up continuous forest tracts which make them more vulnerable to degradation.
(4) Climate Induced wildfires: Rising temperatures combined with prolonged droughts have turned many forests into tinderboxes prone to catastrophic wildfires, releasing all their stored carbon back into the atmosphere.
The Path Forward – How We Can Fight Back
There are many things we can do to safeguard our world’s last remaining forests:
(1) Strengthening Indigenous land rights: Studies show that where forests are managed by indigenous communities they tend to see less deforestation & degradation.
(2) Making responsible consumer choices: Through supporting sustainable supply chains & holding corporations accountable for their practices, as individuals we have significant power to reduce the demand for products grown on deforested land.
(3) Reforestation & Restoration: Planting native tree species and restoring degraded landscapes could play an important role towards rebuilding natural buffers and building up ecosystem's resilience.
(4) Strict enforcements & policies: Governments also need strict enforcement of environment related laws, crackdowns against illegal trafficking activity creation of protected areas that are effectively managed and held accountable.
Conclusion
Join me as I’m fighting for our planet – your planet.
When we lose a primary forest, the process takes centuries until nature has restored its equilibrium. It’s up to all of us being on the frontline in our fight against deforestation and loss of forests around the globe.
We need more than ever to raise awareness about this issue and change our everyday choices while supporting various conservation initiatives that aim to protect what’s left of these precious environments. Together, we are making progress towards achieving a greener and healthier tomorrow for ourselves and our children.
I hope this article has inspired you as much as it did me. Let’s keep fighting to save our beautiful home – Earth!
Until next time,
Cheers
