YouTube Picks Episode 9: The Sand Mafia in India
"YouTube Picks" is a series that features commentary by yours truly on some top-notch videos from the YouTube platform. Each episode will add to your knowledge of the world and broaden your perspective while simultaneously being interesting.
The sand mafia is one of India's great curses. Rampant sand mining in many of India's rivers has reduced their water-holding capacity and been indirectly responsible for floods and droughts. People who stand up to the sand mafia are harassed or killed.
This documentary examines this malaise that threatens to turn India into a severely water-deficit nation. It takes a good, hard look at a reality that holds no promise of better days.
