Misophonia is a disorder that the sufferer feels resentful of loud noises like eating, chewing, breathing hard or even hearing someone repeatedly poking at a pen.

The disorder was discovered in 2001. Scientists in the journal Current Biology found no change in brain activity when people with misophonia heard a "trigger" sound. They also found, triggering sounds can evoke an increased physiological response, which is characterized by an increase in heart rate and sweat.

To arrive at these findings, the team of scientists used MRI to measure the brain activity of the participants with misophysia and did not suffer.

The team presented various sounds to them ranging from neutral voices (rain, noise in crowded cafes and boiling water), unpleasant sounds (crying babies, screaming people) and triggering sounds (breathing or eating sounds).
.
The results show, when exposed to trigger sounds, those who have misophonia behave differently than other study participants.
.
"For many people with misophonia, this will be good news, because for the first time we show a difference in brain structure and function in the sufferer," said Dr. Sukhbinder Kumar, of the Institute of Neuroscience at Newcastle University and Wellcome Center for NeuroImaging at University College London .
.
"This study shows that critical brain changes are evidence to convince a skeptical medical community that misophonia is a disorder," he continued as quoted by the Time page.
