Vincent Edward "Bo" Jackson (born November 30, 1962) is a former baseball and American football player. He is one of the few athletes to be named an All-Star in two major sports, and the only one to do so in both baseball and football. He is widely considered one of the greatest athletes of all time. While at Auburn University, Jackson won the 1985 Heisman Trophy, annually awarded to the outstanding collegiate football player in the United States. Jackson was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996.

Back when I collected baseball cards I definitely had a few of his.

Playing, and being good at, two professional sports is definitely no small feat.

The quote I have from him today is:

"Set your goals high, and don’t stop till you get there.”

This statement seems simple yet it really holds a secret.

Two very simple steps to achieving success that few ever actually master.

Setting high goals and not stopping until they've been achieved.

So first let's address setting high goals.

The thing to remember here is that if you set a goal very high you will need to set mini goals along the way to keep you interested in moving forward.

Without mini goals, a large goal may just be left on the back burner because it will seem to far out of reach.

If you set too small a goal you may achieve it but you may not be that happy that you did, there may not be enough reward.

Or you may not even work toward it.

So how do you know how big to set your goals?

Luckily there is a sweet spot!

It needs to big enough that it gets you excited thinking of it and small enough that you can believe you will achieve it.

That's it, that's the sweet spot!

So the next part is don't stop until until you get there.

This seems simple enough however sometimes along the way a goal can seem overwhelming or we can simply lose interest.

To prevent this we can do a couple things.

First, we can keep score.

In other words we can track our progress in some way that shows us how far we are and how far we've come.

You can have checkpoints if you will that show you that you've made progress.

Create and pay attention to these checkpoints (these can be mini goals leading to the larger goal also), these can revive your passion and interest in the goal at hand.

To keep from losing interest, the first thing is to be sure it was something you were passionate about to begin with.

Another great trick you can use is to be around other people that are also doing, or are interested in, the same things you are doing.

When we are around other people doing things that are parallel to our goals we effectively bounce energies back and forth between each other.

It's a temporary mastermind of sorts and our energy can be completely revived as will theirs.

This is a great way to keep your inspiration and motivation up when facing a goal.

So when you are ready to go for it remember what Bo Jackson says.

"Set your goals high, and don’t stop till you get there.”

Success is follows mental planning, to hit the target.

So true! Keep your eye on the ball!

Had several of his cards too. 88 Topps Football and an 87 Fleer included. As a very active teenager, he was one of my idols and is one of the reasons I played so many sports. Awesome post my man.

Yep i used to have both of those. long time ago.

For decades I attended University of Georgia football games, starting with my faculty days there. I'll never forget a run of about 80 yards that Bo made in Sanford Stadium against the Georgia Bulldogs. His artistry as a runner was so majestic that I have seen that run many times since then in my mind.

Your advice about incremental goals on the way to the larger goal--absolutely on target. Also, I applaud your recommendation that we surround ourselves with like minded achievers.

This article merits my Upvote and Resteem. Well done!

Wow, thank you so much for that!

Yea, Bo really was one of the greats!

Interesting side note: I heard from several sources that he didn't like to practice at Auburn, and told the football coach, "You don't want me to get hurt in practice, and miss the game, do you?"

Have heard that enough that it may be for real. Are you familiar with that pronouncement from Bo?

No, I've never heard anything about it actually.

Could be a sports myth.
