Hello! I'm a poker player, fisherman, and crypto-believer!

Hello Steem!

My name is Ernie Gorham and I'm a 27 year old American from San Diego California.

I am passionate about a few things; mainly fishing, poker, crypto, food, and traveling!

I grew up fishing with my dad and now it's turned into my favorite thing to do in life. Whether it is catching little rainbow trout of chasing giant bluefin tuna, I don't discriminate. They say fishing is the most widely practiced recreational sport in the world and through it I have seen some amazing sights and met some awesome people. I only keep fish that I will eat and share with my family and friends, and strive to make sure as little is wasted as possible

I spent my last summer chasing the big bluefin tuna that showed up in San Diego waters and was finally rewarded after months and many heartbreaks.

I've also been lucky to have won a decent amount of money playing poker recreationally over the last 10 years. I've never been rich by any means, but I just play as a hobby and have netted +$20,000 USD while having a lot of fun.

Again I was fortunate in the cryptocurrency world as one of my older brothers was an early supported of BTC and gave me one as a gift in 2013. After winning $5,000 in a poker tournament in 2015 I purchased one more BTC for $330 and was the owner of 2 BTCs. I've recently sold some of my coin to cover some necessary life costs but am a firm believer in the technology and thing cryptocurrencies are the way of the future. I also own support IOTA, LTC, and Monero, and am trying to learn more and more every day about them.

When I finished university in 2014 I got a job as a deckhand on a motor yacht in the Mediterranean. It was hard work and long hours, but I was able to get paid to travel from Barcelona to Mallorca, Ibiza, Formentera, Nice, Cannes, St. Tropez, Monaco, and Algeria.

After the season ended I traveled to Munich to experience Oktoberfest... What a time! Alcohol fueled three amazing days of meeting people from all over the world and experiencing an amazing little subset of German culture.

For the New Year heading into 2015 I decided to forgo partying for a spearfishing roadtrip down in Baja California, Mexico. It was a long drive on dirt roads, we almost got lost many times and had a nasty flat tire, but it was another awesome trip. We ate lots of delicious fresh fish and witnessed some amazing sunrises.

Now I really had the travel bug, and the following year I spent a month traveling in Vietnam and the Phillipines with two of my best friends. Due to my interest in freediving and spearfishing I bought a underwater camera before the trip and was able to get a few really cool photos, imho.

I just traveled to Mexico City and around the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico as well, but haven't uploaded those photos yet. Maybe in another post soon!

One of my favorite ways to travel in California is backpacking in the Sierra Nevada mountains. There is something truly freeing about putting everything you need to survive on your back and hiking up a mountain. Thousand Island Lake is one of my favorite places in the world and last summer I made a trip up there with a group of my friends.

I would really like to hike the entire length of the Pacific Crest Trail (2600 Miles from Mexico to Canada) so am trying to make that happen in the Summer on 2019.

Finally, I also really love music festivals. I was fortunate to attend the Coachella Valley Music and Art festival in 2007 and have been back 8 other times since. I've seen the festival change a lot over the years - but I have an absolutely amazing time there no matter what. Every year I say it may be my last, but who knows?

My goal for the future is to be able to make a living doing what I am passionate about. I really want to avoid the typical 9-5 job that is so common in the United States. I am planning on building a website soon and starting a podcast on fishing. I also plan to play a lot more poker than before and see how that goes as well.

I think that is enough for now. If you have any questions about anything please don't hesitate to ask! I look forward to being a part of this community!

Really nice to hear about your fortune! Would love to be as lucky as you and buy bitcoin when it was 330$! Thumbs up!

Thank you. I really was very lucky. I owe it all to my older brother, without him I wouldn't even have known what BTC was for years.

Hello and Welcome!
Following for more!
:)

Thank you! Being from San Diego I also am a big lover of craft beer, so I'll definitely be following you back!

Craft beer makes life worthwhile.

Ha! Thanks!
Was just out to visit Monkish.

Hello @ernieg

Dear Ernie, it looks like you have a pretty extensive experience in the southern (Latin) travels of Europe. Barcelona is a treasure, Monaco and St. Tropez means luxury, Algeria means culture. Your underwater photo camera did pretty well, as shown in the pictures.

Nice to meet you here, the poker player man.

Greetings,
@globetrotters

Thank you. It was a really cool experience to get to see all of those places by boat. Nice to meet you as well!

Not so much into poker, big into fishing. I chase carp mainly. Nice bluefin!

Thank you! I've never targeted carp specifically but it is on my to do list. I know in parts of Europe they are very sought after but in the United States most people don't care about catching them. I just enjoy catching any fish so I'm sure I'd enjoy carp fishing. I'll have to get some tips from you before I go.

If you check out my blog there are some carp vids up. I will do a proper guide if you would like.

I'll definitely check it out. I just moved to an area that has lots of carp so it'll definitely be something I'm interested in come Spring!

Unless frozen, winter is not bad for fishing for carp, The bites are a little slower and the wait a little longer, but the fish are generally bigger, and they put up a great fight as there is plenty of excess oxygen in the water, cold water holding more oxygen than warm.

I mainly meant for my personal comfort haha! Thanks for the information though.

Not a fan of the cold myself. But the fishing beats the comfort.

Thank you :)

Really impressed the way you introduced yourself @ernieg

Thank you @sgupta. Still figuring out this platform but figured I'd be as detailed as I could to help everyone get to know me faster.

Welcome to Steemit @ernieg. Looking forward to your Yucatan photos.

Thank you! I unfortunately did some water damage to my gopro on the trip (my fault) so not sure how many I'll still have but I'll go through them soon.

Welcome, Ernie! Hope you will enjoy Steem!

What is your preferred bait for tuna fishing?

Thank you!

That is kind of a complicated question. Live bait is often the best and in California that usually means either Sardines or Mackerels. However certain times the fish will prefer artificial lures as well. A lot of big fish were caught on top water lures called poppers last year, and that would be awesome because you get to witness the fish exploding on your lure on the surface. This year a lot of them were caught on slow pitch jigs - basically big hunks of metal that wobble as they fall in the water. The most common we use here is called a flat-fall jig made by Shimano.

I guess to answer your question though it's whatever bait will give me the best chance that day!

Poppers are the best, not just for tuna but for everything. It is just crazy to see fishes taking them. Especially largemouth bass!

Ya know I've bass fished a lot and never caught one on a popper! It's on my list though!
