Cameroon Calling - Stories of an International Intern in Cameroon
What you can expect of me
Howdy Steemit - Community! My name is Helena and I have learnt about steemit from my friend @tkronsbein (check-out his stories if you are interested in business & technology) and was interested in getting to know more about it so I decided to join for documenting my 3-month internship @IPADBuea during a volunteer service with the European organization GLEN. I want to use steemit as an open diary shared with you to collect my experiences, thoughts, the little and big surpises here in Cameroon as well as to hear your opinions, questions and thoughts on all of this.
The organization that is supporting me during my global learning cycle is called GLEN. GLEN (Global Education Network of Young Europeans) is a network of non-governmental and governmental organisations as well as committed young people who are involved in global education. It is a joint non-profit, politically independent initiative of ten organisations from the European Union. GLEN envisions a world in which people reflect on the realities of the globalised world and their own role in it, and join hands, minds and hearts to build fair and sustainable societies. The whole GLEN learning cycle consists of 3 reflection seminars, a 3-month internship in the global south and an activity of global learning.
Together with two other volunteers from Estonia and Germany, I am part of the Institute of Practical Accounts and Database (IPAD) in Buea, Cameroon. During the next three months, I will support the local facilitators in equipping students, young professionals and entrepreneurs with practical training in information and communication technology to progress their individual professional plans.
What's usually on my mind
I grew up in a contemplative, small village in the Ore Mountains in Germany, only 20 minutes from the Czech border. After finishing high school, I moved to Berlin to study, realize new projects, spend long nights with great friends and to create a second home. I hold a Bachelor's degree in International Business Management and a Master's in Business Intelligence and Process Management from the Berlin School in Economics and Law. I am an avid reader and passionate salsa dancer. I enjoy exploring cultures and working in multi-cultural environments. As a former TEDx organizer, I am passionate about innovation and enthusiastic about the intersection between technology and society. As a design thinking facilitator, I believe in the power of empathy and human-centered design as central forces that drive my projects.
I hope you will enjoy reading about my Cameroonian adventures and I am looking forward to getting in touch with many of you!
Last but not least: That's me
