La lotta al buco dell'ozono ha un prezzo: abbiamo triplicato un tipo di PFAS.

Per chiudere il buco dell'ozono abbiamo sostituito i vecchi gas nocivi con sostanze che, degradandosi, hanno triplicato i livelli di un tipo di PFAS.

In base a uno studio pubblicato su Geophysical Research Letters, i livelli di questo "inquinante eterno" negli ecosistemi di tutto il mondo sono triplicati in 20 anni.

I PFAS sono composti chimici usati in moltissimi complessi industriali, hanno una lunghissima persistenza nell'ambiente. Il TFA è il PFAS più abbondante nelle acque terrestri, è stato trovato persino nel sangue umano, nell'acqua potabile e nella polvere domestica.

Tra i gas attenzionati c'è ne è uno, chiamato HFO-1234yf, ampiamente utilizzato nei condizionatori delle auto, che produce TFA a tassi 10 volte più elevati.

Gli effetti precisi del TFA sulla salute umana non sono noti, anche se l'Unione Europea lo considera dannoso per la vita acquatica e sta valutando se possa avere effetti dannosi per la fertilità e la riproduzione umana.

The fight against the ozone hole comes at a cost: we have tripled a type of PFAS.

To close the ozone hole, we replaced old harmful gases with substances that, as they break down, have tripled the levels of a type of PFAS.

According to a study published in Geophysical Research Letters, levels of this “forever pollutant” in ecosystems worldwide have tripled over the past 20 years.

PFAS are chemical compounds used in many industrial processes and are extremely persistent in the environment. TFA is the most abundant PFAS in terrestrial waters; it has even been detected in human blood, drinking water, and household dust.

Among the gases under scrutiny, one in particular - HFO-1234yf, widely used in car air conditioning systems - produces TFA at rates 10 times higher.

The precise effects of TFA on human health are still unknown, although the European Union considers it harmful to aquatic life and is assessing whether it may have adverse effects on human fertility and reproduction.
