Ciao a tutti amici e amiche di Italy e di Steemit.

Negli ultimi anni abbiamo visto un’accelerazione impressionante dei lanci spaziali. Solo SpaceX nel 2025 ha superato i 160 lanci. Numeri che fino a pochi anni fa sembravano fantascienza.

È un numero che mi colpisce. Mi sono chiesta che effetti possa avere sul pianeta… ma finora non ci ho mai pensato troppo.

Poi ho sentito la notizia che durante il rientro di un Falcon 9 (di SpaceX) è stato registrato un picco di litio nell’alta atmosfera, circa dieci volte sopra la norma.

Tra 100 e 150 km di quota l’atmosfera è molto rarefatta e delicata: il litio, quasi assente a quelle altezze, potrebbe modificarne la composizione, ma gli effetti a lungo termine su clima e chimica restano ancora sconosciuti.

È la prima volta che osserviamo direttamente qualcosa che finora abbiamo quasi ignorato: l’impatto chimico dei rientri spaziali.

Ci siamo sempre concentrati sui detriti. Abbiamo parlato del rischio collisioni tra satelliti. Ma pochissimo delle conseguenze ambientali.

Adesso non bisogna farsi prendere dal panico.
Non parliamo di catastrofi imminenti.

Se però, il traffico spaziale cresce in modo esponenziale, allora sì, potrebbero esserci effetti ancora poco studiati.

E sappiamo da Musk, che SpaceX vuole espandere la costellazione Starlink nei prossimi anni.

Io non sono contro l’innovazione. Anzi.
Ma ogni nuova tecnologia parte sempre con entusiasmo, però solo dopo anni iniziamo a misurarne gli impatti ambientali.

Comunque quello che mi spaventa di più, è l'assenza di regole in questo settore, come se lo spazio non fosse di nessuno.

Ed è proprio questo il rischio: che diventi il Far West.

Già siamo incasinati sul pianeta terra, ci manca solo peggiorare la situazione attorno all'atmosfera terrestre!

In recent years, we’ve witnessed an impressive acceleration in space launches. SpaceX alone surpassed 160 launches in 2025. Numbers that, until just a few years ago, sounded like science fiction.

It’s a figure that really strikes me. I’ve wondered what kind of impact this could have on our planet… but until now, I hadn’t given it much thought.

Then I came across the news that during the re-entry of a Falcon 9 (by SpaceX), a lithium spike was detected in the upper atmosphere, about ten times above normal levels.

To be precise: on February 19, 2025, lithium was measured above Germany. ANSA.it

Between 100 and 150 km in altitude, the atmosphere is extremely thin and delicate: lithium, which is almost absent at those heights, could alter its composition, but the long-term effects on climate and atmospheric chemistry are still unknown.

This is the first time we’ve directly observed something we had largely overlooked until now: the chemical impact of space re-entries.

We’ve always focused on debris. We’ve discussed the risk of satellite collisions.
But very little about environmental consequences.

There’s no need to panic.
We’re not talking about imminent catastrophes.

However, if space traffic grows exponentially, then yes, there could be effects that are still poorly studied.

And we know from Musk that SpaceX plans to expand the Starlink constellation in the coming years.

I’m not against innovation. Quite the opposite.
But every new technology begins with enthusiasm, and only years later do we start measuring its environmental impact.

What worries me most, though, is the lack of clear rules in this sector, as if space belonged to no one.

And that’s the real risk: that it turns into the Wild West.

We’re already struggling enough here on planet Earth - we really don’t need to make things worse around its atmosphere too.
