We’ve got our own awakening to deal with. If what we learn and share assists with your awakening, It’s a bonus. It’s not our goal. Speaking of which, we’ve decided that “awakening,” which is already a brand, (awakening dot com exists in, of all places, Las Vegas), is a euphemism. A neat little 9-letter word package encompassing a concept that is far greater than our puny human brains can fathom.
Your boy, as you have probably figured out, loves words. But love, is a hurtin’ thing, (Lou Rawls). We can enjoy words so much that often we forget that they were forged by humans to relay ideas to other humans. And these words, reflect the mindset of those humans who are in command. This makes sense. You can’t have a flock of bleating sheeple making up their own words. That would be chaos. Look what has happened since Babylon.
When you really stop to consider it, language is a tricky thing. Many a frustrated student, and even learned philosophers have declared Latin to be an awkward language. Though twice as old as Latin, Greek still survives, more or less, while Latin has been declared a “dead language.”
Latin never really died, it was more like a 300 year fade out and phase in, to what we recognize as the “Romance” languages today. Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian.
If you deep-dive the etymology of words, which we do occasionally here, you cannot help but notice the reverence a civilization has for, “the elements,” let’s call them. The Greeks famously created words with reverence to “gods,” especially words that describe abstract forces like wisdom, “Sophia.” Or “Psyche,” which is a Greek word that means “to breathe.” In Roman mythology Psyche became an immortal woman who married Cupid, god of love, or maybe lust. (That may have been Eros.) If you know my position on, “psychiatry,” you also know how a word that originally meant, “to breathe,” became a method of measuring and determining, and ultimately, controlling, (so we’re told), the operation of, “The Mind.”
Very well, if you are twelve years of age and writing to the President.
Dear. In letter writing originated from Old English "deore," meaning precious or costly, and evolved by the 14th century to denote esteem or affection in salutations like, "Dear Sir," (sire, or “My Lord.) By the 17th century, it became the standard polite opening for most letters. Although we were not writing to a lord and master, the protocol was set.
But what really caught my attention, was the closing. “Yours.”
Humans have been writing letters for a long time, but in the 1700s, in Britain, of course, there was this “Great Age of Letter Writing.” The culture of the time was one of hierarchical respect. The British people were royal subjects. It wouldn’t be unusual to expect a letter to be signed, “Your Loyal Subject,” who ever.
Much of the English language revolves around ownership. Europeans think that anything, or any one, can be owned. (They’re right. It’s done. Just not as overtly as during slavery in the American South.) Air space. Colonize the moon. Resource “rights”. Intellectual property. The United States government believes that it owns the residents of this country. The “words” are manipulated to suggest obligations in exchange for freedom, and the herd eats it up. We sing songs about freedom, and the media reminds us that we are free. However, we are free to obey. Free to comply. Free to stay in line. But not free to opt out, without penalty. Not even free to leave. Try expatriating from the US and Uncle Sam takes a cut.
This is the reality of the awakening. The bars come into view. The space you occupy begins to look more like a jail cell, and the wider your eyes become, the smaller the cell appears. But here’s the encouraging part. The more you see the more you know. Eventually you figure out how to get out of that cell. But then you realize that the cell you just left, is part of a greater prison.
What next? Stay tuned. But remind me, if I forget to mention the next level.
