The End of the World
Have you ever wondered how long our existence can continue on the Earth? Our planet is a rare phenomenon in the known universe, one that boasts of the existence of life. I think the Earth itself can be classified as a single living organism, and as a characteristic pertaining to all beings – One that is subject to demise.
Scientists put the Earth at about 4 billion years old, with life expected to continue in the near term. Be that as it may, it is not un-phantom able to think that it could all end unexpectedly and in the twinkle of an eye. Life could cease to exist as we know it under certain circumstances if we are not fully prepared.
The end of the World has for long been a phenomenon debated by scientists, researchers, religious personnel and ordinary folks alike. Virtually all Religions mention the end of existence and transcendence into the great beyond. Hollywood has not been left out either, and deserves credit for the added curiosity with its heavily publicized, blockbuster doomsday movies. From viruses to nuclear wars, and several creative end of days scenarios like Alien invasions and Religious predictions. While all these scenarios are a thrill to our imaginations, for the sake of different beliefs and views, I have listed what I feel are the most widely accepted, possible end of days scenarios we face.
The most immediately imaginable is an end to the World initiated by humans. Nuclear Wars, Climate change ( though not proven) and the use of biological warfare – resident evil style, are things which could potentially set the Planet the way of our neighborly red planet – Mars. Mars was once thought to have inhabited life and water but is today a hostile, dead planet that would do no favors to any living organism. A nuclear war between the major powers of the World may also set us down that path, with the use of nuclear weapons triggering an ice age, causing famine and mass extinctions. As crazy as it may seem to start a nuclear war, it is very well within the realm of possibility for us humans – leave it to us to screw ourselves up.
There are also some non human factors that could possibly trigger the end of the World. However unlikely as they may seem, they are entirely possible and could trigger the end of our planet. One Would be an eruption from one or more of our seven super volcanoes in existence. We could also be done by a giant asteroid colliding with the Earth – although that seems unlikely because of the effective monitoring around our magnetic field by NASA.
One event is sure to bring an end to all life on our planet though – A supernova. The expansion and eventual explosion of our very own Sun will eventually bring an end to life on our solar system as we know it. Luckily for us, our sun is still very young and isn’t expected to explode for a couple of billions of years.
There you have it guys. Feel free to share ways you think the World comes to an end and to forget to hit that upvote and resteem if you enjoyed it.
Are you aware that the earth's ecosphere has survived as many as twenty mass extinction events in it's history?
Five of which were rather severe, in which 80 to 97% of all life at that time was destroyed.
Are you aware that during the last ice age the CO2 level dropped below 190ppm....plants die at 170ppm...
We dodged that bullet...barely.
Mother Earth is rather stubborn...
too stubborn for something as minor as humans to have any effect.
That is a nice thought. Would be nice to know earth and nature will flourish once it is rid of the current infestation. 🙂
what infestation is that?
I will bite and be captain obvious.
Humans are the current infestation. mmm maybe not as obvious as I thought, is there a better word?
If that's what you believe then the only moral thing to do would be suicide.
It's painless I've been told.
Is that what you want?
Since I myself do not have the guts to commit suicide I can't expect an entire species to, I do however not see a problem with the human race going extinct and only time will tell, if left to the masses to determine the species future then it is fortunate that we might not even need an extinction level event to occur as they will do it all themselves, saving the universe the effort. I will be long dead by then and reiterate that how I see it now, there is nothing to lose if humanity were to go "poof" just another spec in history. Although my opinion is not fully formed and definitely a generalisation it is still my opinion and is not intended to cause a ruckus. Haha I don't get attached to opinions in that fashion.
Very interesting outlook on how the world may end. I think about this often and I enjoyed reading your take on it. Upvoted and resteemed you. Keep it interesting!
Nature is indifferent to the human world, for that is what we mean when we speak of "the world" - we mean the human world. We are the ones anxious over our mortality and rightly so; we are vulnerable. We were born and we must die, whereas Nature is the cycle of birth and death and the cycle is eternal.
It is not only Nature that kills, as we know. We are rather good at it too. I anticipate mankind very nearly kills itself and in so doing weakens itself to the point where Nature is able to finish it off, and thus like the deluges of religion Nature cleanses the planet of human iniquity.
