An impulse buy to relive my youth. A Super Nintendo mini and Megaman X.

in #life6 years ago

For a while now I have been enjoying the old game reviews by user @schattenjaeger.

Some awesome classics have been replayed and reviewed by him.

He's been reviewing all the old Megaman series for instance and I kept thinking how I would love to play them again.

Especially Megaman X.

His recent story is about in fact about Megaman X (here) and I caved

I went online and ordered a SNES mini without thinking.

A pure impulse buy.

It arrived today.

I love it.

I know I could have grabbed on emulator online and downloaded all the games I wanted but I'm in a period of my life where I don't want to do that anymore.

I don't mind going legit. I find it way easier.

I also rent movies online when I want to watch something for instance.

The thing is.

I used to have all the time in the world and no money when I was a kid and maybe I could justify it then.

But not anymore.

Also.

I feel that it's time for a little repentance :)

This is the box of the SNES mini. It comes with 21 games. Including Megaman X and Zelda Link to the past. Another gem I'm looking forward to playing.

This is what's in the box. A SNES mini, 2 controllers, and 2 cables. It does not come with an adapter. I ordered one separately.

Hooking the machine up is easy enough. It works with HDMI. One huge downside is the length of the controller cables. They are way to short (around a meter) forcing you to sit inside your tv. (I checked online there are extension cables for sale).

I tried a couple of games to test the device. One thing I noticed straight away is the difficulty compared to today. It's full-on mentalness straight from the start. I tried Mario, Streetfighter 2, Zelda, Megaman X and Contra. Note the 4:3 resolution!

What I also noticed straight away when I was playing Megaman X in my test run is that I was having fun.

Old-skool fun. Action from the start and no long intros and endless cutscenes.

Also, you are not presented with a tutorial telling you how to play the game and to take you by the hand.

You have to figure everything out for yourself and I love that.

I don't know why we stopped doing that in today's era of gaming.

But I guess this is a generational thing.

Or maybe it's just me getting older :)

Anyway, I'm 33 years old and I just got a device from my youth in my living room and I'm over the moon.

Tonight I'll play Megaman X again!

I'm not sure how good I will be.

But the cool thing about these games and what I remember is that every mistake is your own and there are plenty of opportunities to learn and improve.

So, nobody to blame but yourself.

Just the way I like it.

It's quite odd, but I find the old Sega Genesis & SNES games a lot more fun than even the new VR stuff. Playing Mortal Kombat II or Street Fighter on these consoles just teleports me me back to the 90's era of arcade gaming.

Nostalgia is a hell of a drug!

It's the golden age of gaming as far as I'm concerned.

YASS!

Glad to know I inspired you. :)

My SNES Classic should be arriving in the mail early next week. I also can't wait. I'm too afraid to use my actual SNES these days in fear of it breaking. It has too much value.

I also agree with you on emulators.

I don't agree with piracy being illegal, per se, but I do think people should be more willing to pay for legit stuff.

I enjoy being a Patreon for YouTubers and just yesterday I willingly paid money to a guy doing SNES soundfont remixes of NES Megaman soundtracks.

You can check him out here:

Be it a game, an album, or whatever, I'd like for people to pay people who work hard to bring them entertainment and art.

I love this device! There is just something about playing it with the 'original' controllers. I do admit that I lost some skill and it will take me a while to reach my old level (if ever). I used to be very decent at playing these games. I hope it's not age :).

Whoa, this is amazing.
This is old school.
This is for me late 80s, early 90s.
This was 2d game.
I remember playing Mario Bros 3.
Keep on steemin'

I enjoyed playing supermario,
It was 21 years ago.

I think I was 6 when I first played super Mario bros on the NES. I ran straight into the first Goomba. Some People say that guy is the most deadliest character ever in a game :)

I will buy one asap, thanks for reminding us the old days @exyle,
@racoo

Ahh thus brings back memories 😻🙌

I did the same with the Atari & Sega Genesis console! Also have PS2 with Final Fantasy!

Oh and I’m now getting into Minecraft with my son! 😊

Fantastic! You're in for lots of nostalgic hours! I've actually been thinking about going back and playing some of the games from my youth again soon. Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Shinobi on the Mega Drive and then some of the older Final Fantasy games on the PlayStation. Enjoy!

O man! those titles bring back memories.

Times when the imagination wasn't hindered by thoughts about paying rent and bills, going to work, and world issues! I find video games to be a great escape when I want to unwind even to this day.

Golden Axe, ahhhhh. Never have I felt so close to my playing partner than during that game. (Ok Target Renegade on the Spectrum perhaps!) I played that to death on the Amiga with my brother.

It was such a great game! I'm definitely going to have to find the time to play it again.

Nice
I do play car racing on my smartphone, my favorite childhood game was.

Have fun, my dear!! It has been a while ago but you will learn soon enough. I remember your dedication to those games, so be aware!

My mum would not be so polite and probably use the word 'addiction'!

A child of the 80s and early 90s never had it so good with regards to computer games!

I am afraid addiction is a better word than dedication, also for Mark (lol)

I did wonder if you would say that 😁 Such great times I have very fond memories of.

And you are not the only one. My elder son, @look4balance, replied immediately to Mark and said he would come over as soon as possible to play together. To relive the old times so to speak.

Yes, if I was closer I'd be suggesting a visit too!! 😁

Wow this is so awesome @exyle I want to buy one of those mini snes myself its got too many of my favourite games on there like Super Mario World,Donkey Kong, Zelda, Mega Man and many more, if you ever beat mega man try Super Ghouls and Ghosts I think its the hardest out of the 21 games there.

It's great to be able to relive our youth. I'm older than you and remember seeing Pong in my mall's arcade when I was a young child. I grew up with games like Space Invaders, Asteroids and Pac-Man. Every once in a while I'll get the itch to play them and turned my kids on to them. Though those games are primitive by modern standards, they're still a lot of fun.

I thought seriously about buying an arcade quality console containing many of those games, but decided against it because I thought my kids would spend too much time playing games rather than doing their homework. I may rethink that once they're all grown up.

The old games are so tough that there are life lessons there. Maybe after homework!

Excellent post and that nintendo mini looks great with 20+ games not a bad deal at all and man i also love to play the old classic games and i mostly play snow bros and super mario a lot when i was 10 to 12 years old and today after watching your post it reminds me my past too and now i should also buy that nintendo mini soon, thanks for sharing your beautiful memories with us, Stay blessed
