A landslide after torrential rain has claimed 7 lives in Nias, Northern Sumatra. Deforestation and over construction in sensitive areas is the most common cause for such calamities. Yet again bringing home to humanity that we will not survive if we do not respect and take care to maintain our trees and wildlife. Trees greatly assist water getting down deep in the ground to feed the water table and rivers. When we cut down too many trees heavy rain simply flushes the top soil from our land, creating disasters such as this.
Another blue sky day in Costa Rica with 28 centigrade and 80% humidity. It appears the dry season may have come early as there has been no El Niño effect this year. We are in fact experiencing a La Nada! Without an El Niño or La Niña signal present, other less predictable climatic factors will govern fall, winter and spring weather conditions. The 'in between' ocean state, La Nada, is frustrating for long-range weather forecasters and prediction.

Interesting post @icedrum! It's cold and clear here in Southern Spain but apparently it's also been one of the wettest Octobers for many years. It's our first year here so we've a lot to learn... but it's definitely drier than our home country of Scotland! :)
