The Silver Lining of the Pandemic
Looking back only 2 months ago when we were barely getting out of winter and making plans for the year to come makes it almost impossible to comprehend how we ended up here, in a period of isolation, lockdown, restrictions, and grim economic predictions.
Little did we know that things could get so bad so rapidly, but the hars reality hit us harder and harder day by day, as the number of people infected with the coronavirus continued to surge.
Currently, some countries seeem to find signs of optimism as their infection rate has stabilized or even entered a descending path, nonetheless, plenty more are still waiting for the crisis to peak.
All the while, the regular citizens can do nothing but read the news, isolate, and wait fo this dystopian script to reach its closing scene.
However, amidst this global humanitarian crisis whose economic effects might linger for months or even years to come, there might be one sole beneficiary - nature.
Nature has always found a way to reborn even after terrifying distasters such as natural calamities or man-made horrors like Chernobyl or the atomic bomb. Nowadays, nature's biggest enemy is man.
Our industries, food, transportation means, hobbies and lifestyle take a great toll in terms of the damage we cause in the environment.
If there's one positive aspect about this pandemic that is the fact that nature has the chance to breath for once, as major cities have put a lockdown on their factories requiring workers to stay at home.
For the first time in more than a century, we see once again more people on the streets than cars.
Huge urban agglomerations report the cleanest air level in a long while as people work, travel and spend less.
All these mean less polution which is beneficial to the environment. Hopefully, we will not get to live another crisis like this, but taking time to look at the bigger picture, we can at least appreciate that our home is a cleaner place, at least temporarily.
