Nintendo President Says Second Year is "Crucial" For Switch Success

in #life7 years ago

Since its launch back in March 2017, the Nintendo Switch has proven to be a massive success having already sold 10 million units worldwide and attracting dozens of third-party titles to the system.

It's a massive contrast to the Wii U which struggled to convince both gamers and developers to take up the console. Despite the success of the Switch so far though, Nintendo are intent on staying on top of their A game and are therefore planning their next moves carefully.

Nintendo's President Tatsumi Kimishima recently stated in an interview that the next year will be absolutely crucial for the success of the Switch. Not only is it important to keep attracting the best publishers and developers to the Switch and to keep current owners happy, but Nintendo are also looking to attract users who who barely touch games consoles.’

“In order to be playable in the long term, the second year is crucial," Kimishima said. "Our task is to add more users, including people who barely touch game consoles.”

Worldwide sales of the Nintendo Wii currently sit at around 100 million units so the Switch still has a way to go if it is to beat the Wii. However sales of the Switch so far have been good and have already seen sales surpass the lifetime sales of the Wii U in Japan in less than 12 months!

The Switch is interesting and I think it is a great combination portable/console but they seriously need to do something about that price. $300 is not that bad but it is quite a bit of money, especially considering 'retail' on the base is $90 alone.

Is the base required for anything other than simply playing on a television? I would much rather there be a cheaper, portable, only model available if that base is only required to play on a TV. Hell, if they did that, I would probably own two or more by now.
