Why do some people keep pretending to be rich?

Today I bumped into a person again who I know a bit. What strikes me though is that he is always saying something to show that he is rich.

Probably like many others I don't care and also I have the feeling he is pretending.

Think I just have a hard time understanding why it is important to show your wealth. Ok, most of us probably want to make a good appearance but in this way remains bizar to me though. Guess most of us knows one person who likes to show the money while not having it :-)
