Steemers!! Are you thinking of having Dreadlocks? Before you do read this.
Man having dreadlocks on your head comes with its own burdens, people always put you in a box before they actually know what you are about, read some of what I have discovered over the years, what actually “some” peeps think of you.
Dirty, uncouth, and rough by some.
I once watched police in my hometown stop a group of guys with dreads, harassed and searched because apparently they looked armed. I noticed I get searched more thorough than anyone else before entering a certain mall. dreadlocks, in some quarters label you a SUSPECT!She speaks patois
Even though you are not from Jamaica, people often times walk up to you saying stuff like, wagwan ras , waya se, and other words that sound like boom! Boom! Boom! that you most definitely do not understand. And another thing they won’t even shake your hands, the will just give you fist bumps!!
He loves ragga/reggae/ riddims
Your music playlist may be full of RNB songs, sometimes classical music or soft rock, but because you have dreadlocks, some will expect you to be listening to Riddims from Chris martin, Konshens or reggae classics of Bob Marley and maybe you love soft rock or RNB.
!Do you sell weed?
Dreads stereotypes you by putting you in a basket of either a weed smoker or peddler or both. Trust me I get this a lot, much as I don’t partake (believe me).He is bad influence to our children.
Most of elderly people especially your friends parents may not necessarily understand why you have dreadlocks, you may be the best in class and one that influences their children positively, but as soon as they see your hair, they warn your friends against associating with you. With the idea that you may spoil them. TRUE STORY!
Well steemers now you know a bit of it, would you still want to have dreadlocks?
haha, true...and with the people I grew up with they were never a fashion statement, there was always a meaning which negates all the incoming hassles...
I’m thinking of getting dreads when I’m around 80...or maybe sooner. Thanks for the advice and welcome to Steemit!
Shocked to hear you have to face all those really dumb stereotypes. (Does that sound naive?!) So far your dreads aren't even that "locky"..... How far are you going to let them go? I thought I'd let you know, (assuming you are the guy in the first pic:) your hairstyle suits you really well - you appear fashionable and "clean" . Even the guy with the phone does, although he may appear a little more seriously into the dreadlock life style. Ah! See , that's how stereotypes are born!! Fie on me.
I was grey at 35 and people treated me like 62 - seriously they could not see past that, and estimated me always 20 years older at least! Fortunately, not dying your hair is becoming bit more popular now, because of the toxins in so many products. Women are chosing longevity over fake colour hair!
I like how you choose your OWN style - even if it happens to be similar to something an entire group identifies with.
My only concern would be when the dreadlocks start to become too matted and might be housing too many "friends".... That is not the case with the girl in the picture no.2, b.t.w.(eventhough they are long).
