I know what you mean about aging and the preference for a quick decline over a gradual one. We lost my mother in law to Alzheimer's several years ago and it was scary to watch her transformation into seemingly different people. But it was a testament to her spirit that she remained kind-hearted to the end.

and yeah, my grandfather passed due to complications from Parkinson's, so I've seen the slow burn before, just from a distance (I was always working when family traveled to go see him).
either way, death is a motherfucker no matter how you slice it, no matter how slow or fast it comes.
