I think a critical detail missing from this is that the new neurons created from these stem cells (in the ventricular-subventricular zone) migrate to very specific areas of the brain (the olfactory bulb in rodents and the basal ganglia in humans). I totally agree that this is interesting, but keep in mind that the division of stem cells probably doesn't impact the cortex at all.
