Bronchi (singular bronchus) are the air passages of the lungs branching off of the trachea (windpipe) that eventually lead to gas exchange between atmospheric air and the blood at the microscopic grape-like structures called alveoli. At high altitudes where pressure of oxygen in the air is lower, it has been suggested that bronchi can expand their networks of alveoli so that more gas exchange can occur to make up for the decreased oxygen levels in the air. More gas exchange occurs in this case because of a higher surface area for oxygen to diffuse into the blood stream being directed from the right side of the heart.
