كتاب "ماذا لو"، لراندال مونروي السابق ذكره، في قراءتك للكتاب، تتأرجح بين حيرتك ما إن كان هذا الكتاب غريب الأطوار، يفتح الباب للجنون أم للعقل، ماذا سيحدث إن ذهب القمر بعيداً؟ ماذا إن فقدت خلايانا القدرة على الانقسام فجأة، كم نستطيع أن نعيش بعدها؟ ما مدى خطورة السباحة في المسبح أثناء عاصفة رعدية؟ ماذا إن كان لدى كل شخص على الأرض توأم روح واحد فقط؟ من أي علو تحتاج أن ترمي قطعة لحم كي تصل إلى الأرض مطهوة؟ ماذا إن وصلنا توربينات بالأشخاص الذين يلعبون في الصالة الرياضية، كم مقدار الطاقة التي نستطيع أن نحصل عليها؟
نحن لا ننسى أن واحدة من أهم نظريات العالم، وهي نظرية الجاذبية لنيوتن، كانت إجابة على سؤال بالغ الجنون آنذاك عندما سقطت التفاحة على رأس العالم النائم تحت الشجرة ليتساءل فجأة: لماذا سقطت التفاحة إلى الأسفل وليس إلى الأعلى؟
راندال مونروي، برسوماته الساخرة التي تعلق في الذاكرة على الفور، هو فيزيائي عمل سابقاً في ناسا، وهو صاحب موقع الكوميكس الشهير xkcd، الذي وصلت إحصائيات زواره إلى نصف مليون أو مليون تقريباً في اليوم الواحد، وقد بدأ تساؤلاته المثيرة على الموقع ثم حولها إلى كتاب نجح أن يبقى في صدارة الكتب الأكثر مبيعاً لعامين متتاليين.
