Monster Energy Supercross - Anaheim 1 - Predictions pt2
Following on from my earlier post here I realized we have many more contenders to think about! Modern Supercross is so rich with talent you are almost spoilt for choice when you are thinking about potential winners. You step back and think "damn! I didn't even write about this guy, or him..." haha.
So I am back to set the record straight haha and share more of my potential contenders :)
Justin Barcia
I still find it crazy that someone with Barcia's talent fell so far from the crazy heights he achieved in the 250 class. At one point he was the hottest star coming through the ranks but a series of injuries have hindered his progress in Supercross and before the start of this season was looking to privateer his own Honda. An off season training injury to Davi Millsaps though left a gap on the Monster Energy Knich Yamaha Factory team and they have turned to Barcia for the first six rounds. Talk about town seems to indicate that this deal will continue past this point but for now that is the time frame he has to turn things around. If he can keep it clean and on two wheels he has a real chance to make an impact this year. I think the loss of Factory support has taught him a few good lessons though and i expect a new rider to emerge from him in 2018.
Broc Tickle
I guess you could say this is the shock 'wild card' entry for my race win predictions. Sure Tickle is not the first name on anyones lips when talking about race wins but lets not forget Red Bull KTM do not choose people who are not made of the right stuff. Tickle has been working also with Aldon Baker and again Aldon's pedigree speaks for itself! He has trained EVERY Supercross champion this decade... think about that for a moment :) It's no secret that I'm always rooting for team orange haha so i guess this is my 'wild card' entry.
Chad Reed
Well no Supercross Predictions post is complete without at least mentioning the name of Supercross legend and veteran Chad Reed #22 haha. After last years Supercross effort coupled with his injury while practicing for the Red Bull Straight Rhythm event expectations for the veteran will be at an all time low. This could play into Reeds hands though as he still has the speed and the desire to compete at the highest levels and if you take your eye off someone... They can surprise you. He will be privateering his own Husqvarna this time round after doing some testing of all the bike brands at his private track and has said he is comfortable on it. Definitely not one to discount!
Dean Wilson
What a year it has been for Dean Wilson! This time last year he was funding his own races on his privateer Yamaha and his future was far from certain. Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing took him in and he has been transformed! He has had a storming off season also and i think he will be one to watch in 2018. Strangely, Deano has never been on a podium in his 450 SX career which i find astounding but is also testament to the amount of bad luck he has had over the last few years. I expect him to pick up his first and possibly many more this year.
Cole Seely
In a similar spot to Reed is Factory Honda HRC rider Cole Seely. All eyes are on his team mate Ken Roczen which in some ways must be nice for Seely. As i said about Reed if all eyes are elsewhere you can expect someone as deadly as Seely to take full advantage of this. He is no stranger to leading races and is very technical indoors, definitely one to watch.
Blake Baggett
Another dark horse for this season is Blake Baggett. He set the outdoor championship on fire this year with a string of amazing rides, hampered by a clash with Anderson which saw him pick up a nasty thumb injury for which he rode with for the remainder of the season. I would be far from surprised if he picked up some wins this year after his performances in recent times. He is also a former 250SX champion so don't count the RMATV/MC KTM rider out.
Exciting times steemers :)
