The Irishman. A Movie Review.

I have seen the movie trailer and got me interested in the prospect that a seemingly ordinary person could have been involved in many events that shaped the USA to what it is today. When I finally have the time, I decided to watch it.

My wife and children never bothered to join me as they prefer more action-filled or entertaining movies. A Martin Scorcese film is certainly not for everyone but it has a distinct appeal to me that I could watch every Martin Scorcese's directed film without feeling any boredom at all.

The film is based on a book by ‎Charles Brandt, "I Heard You Paint Houses" — Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran's account of his involvement with the Mafia, the Bufalino crime family, and Hoffa's death. The expression "paint houses" actually meant killing people as blood splatters red color on the walls every time you shoot people in the head. An expression common to mobsters during that era.

The movie begins on the recollection of the main character Frank "the Irishman" Sheeran, at this point in his life, he is already 83 years old spending the last days of his life in a home for elderly persons. Although the accuracy of the account has been put into question, it sheds light and gives me an understanding of how the Mafia in that era worked and influenced society.

Here is Frank Sheeran and his character played by Robert De Niro in the movie:

Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci, among many other legendary actors, is a fictionalized account of Mafia hitman Frank Sheeran. It involves two main events in his claim, the death, and disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa which to this day remains a mystery and the killing of mobster Crazy Joe Gallo—gunned down during his own birthday party at Umberto’s Clam House in Little Italy.

Jimmy Hoffa is a controversial character during that time. Known to have a long-running feud with the Kennedy's. A staunch union leader, Hoffa served as the Teamsters president from 1957 through 1967. While the union has been known for supporting truckers across America ... it also became known for its ties to organized crime and the Mafia specifically.

Here is Jimmy Hoffa during his days:

and his role being played by Al Pacino:

Jimmy Hoffa was eventually killed by the Mafia mobsters as executed by his long time friend Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran.

A Lesson from the Movie.

Criminals who have their own moral codes can look respectable and live the high life. In the end, it still profits nothing. A legacy men can be proud of but still can end up the meaningless pursuit. Life always ends in death and what do you have after all of this is over?

To me, the movie is both entertaining and a lot of things to ponder. A memorable one and should be a must-watch movie especially to daddies like me.
