Movie Review | Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets
This movie made me cringe so hard that I had to rethink my life decisions. Okay kidding aside (not really kidding) this movie was just bad for me plain and simple. I don't really read reviews of other people before I watch a movie because I want to be surprised and unbiased, so looking at the movie poster and the title I thought to myself this might be a good sci-fi adventure movie, it wasn't.
Right off the bat the acting was horrible, the movie tried to get us all wrapped up with the will-they-won't-they romance of the protagonists, Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne, but it was just annoying with zero chemistry. I wasn't expecting much from them but I was at least expecting it to be bearable. Their character's serious demeanor did not complement the movie's playful and comical aesthetic which made the theme of the film confusing.
The story was lackluster, predictable and bland. The characters were flat and basic that they practically gave away the story (but the movie explains it all in dialogue anyway as if you haven't figured it out). The pacing was good, although the Rihana scene was a bit too long for my taste. The thing that I have to be most savage at is the script, it was downright horrible. It was cheesy, witless, and annoyingly cliche. Most of my cringing happened because of the script.
I'll give credit where credit is due and say that the movie was, at the very least, entertaining. The CGI was good, it was lively and energetic, something you would expect from a sci-fi adventure film these days.
I wouldn't mind playing this movie in the background while doing laundry or cleaning my room but aside from that I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone.
I'll have to give this one a 3/10, so if you want something colorful to glance at while doing some chores definitely play this movie in the background!
