I Learned the Hard Way How to Move a Grandfather Clock Safely

A few months ago, I had to figure out how to properly move a grandfather clock when helping my family relocate and honestly, I underestimated how complicated it could be.

It Looked Simple… Until It Wasn’t

At first glance, a grandfather clock just seems like a tall piece of furniture. Heavy, sure—but manageable.

That’s exactly what I thought until we tried to move it without preparation.

The moment we tilted it slightly, we heard internal parts shifting. That’s when I realized: this wasn’t just furniture, it was a delicate mechanical system.

What I Wish I Knew Before Moving It

If you’ve never handled one before, here are a few things that surprised me:

The pendulum must be removed before any movement
The weights are heavier than they look and very sensitive
Even small vibrations can affect the internal mechanism

Skipping any of these steps can lead to damage you won’t notice until it’s too late.

The Right Way (After Some Trial and Error)

After doing proper research, we restarted the process:

• Carefully disassembled all removable parts
• Wrapped each component separately
• Secured the clock body tightly before lifting
• Kept it upright the entire time

That made a huge difference.
