Watch a film inspired by real-life stories or people.(Dangal)

I will share my thoughts about the movie Dangal, which is an inspirational sports drama based on the real-life story of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his two daughters, Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari Phogat. The main character, Mahavir Singh, was played by one of Bollywood's most popular and successful actors, Aamir Khan. It is through this movie that the real-life incident became even more inspirational to people, and it gained acceptance as one of the best films.

Movie Name: Dangal
Release Year: 2016
Country: India
Run Time: 2h 41m

The main character, Mahavir Singh, was a national-level wrestler whose dream was to participate at the international level and win a gold medal for the country. However, due to financial condition, he had to give up his dream and join a job, but he wished that his son would win the gold medal for the country instead of him. With the hope of having a son, his wife Daya, gave birth to four daughters in a row. The two elder daughters were Geeta and Babita.

One day two sisters beat up two boys in the locality for some wrongdoing, their father, Mahavir, realized that they possessed the spirit and strength of a wrestler. He then dreamed of them winning the gold medal for the country on his behalf, and Mahavir himself began giving his daughters daily wrestling training. Although people in society ridiculed and opposed this, he remained firm in his goal.

Mahavir made his two daughters wrestle with boys. Although they lost initially, they later began to win wrestling matches against boys. Thus, under Mahavir's strict training, the elder daughter Geeta participated in the national championship and won the gold, achieving this success as India's first female wrestler. She was then sent elsewhere for advanced training at the national level. There, while following the techniques of the new coach, she forgot her father's principles and techniques.

Geeta started losing one international tournament after another. She returned home during a holiday, and driven by her anger and arrogance, she defeated Mahavir while wrestling with him, which hurt her father deeply. Meanwhile, his younger daughter, Babita, also won the national championship and got the opportunity for advanced training, just like her elder sister. She made her elder sister Geeta understand the contributions of their father, and Geeta also realized her mistake.

Then, Mahavir secretly started teaching the two sisters the correct wrestling techniques he had mastered, after their academic training. Finally, Geeta qualified for the final of the 55 kg wrestling at the Commonwealth Games. However, her coach, due to his own ego, did not want Geeta to win a medal because of her father. So, he conspired to lock Geeta's father in a room during the final.

Losing her morale when she couldn't find her father in the gallery, Geeta lost the initial rounds. But in the end, she followed the training her father had taught her and emerged victorious. Through this victory, Geeta Phogat became the first Indian woman to win a wrestling gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Finally, she celebrated her victorious moments with her father, and Mahavir became very emotional and proud seeing his daughter's success.

Did the movie make you more curious about the real-life story?

Yes, watching the movie definitely increase my curiosity about the Mahavir Singh Phogat family. I was truly amazed by the rural society depicted in the movie, where girls and boys were discriminated against separately. Even after facing so much ridicule and aggressive remarks from his community and neighbors, Mahavir never backed down from fulfilling his dream. Mahavir Singh's courage surprised me the most. My curiosity grew intensely to know how he rewrote history by overcoming so many societal obstacles.

Moreover, this was the first time in India's history that a girl won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Behind the realization of this rare event, Geeta’s contribution, alongside her father's, was the greatest. This is evident from the movie when I saw that their hair was cut short like boys so that they wouldn't feel inferior, which shows how much they sacrificed for their dream. Therefore, after watching the movie, an interest in knowing about the real-life Mahavir Singh's family was sparked.

Which scene or moment felt the most powerful or emotional?

For me, the most powerful and emotional moment was the last six seconds of Geeta's Commonwealth Games final when, despite needing 5 points, she unexpectedly won with 3 points at the last moment and that felt like an incredible moment to me. Before applying her technique, she remembered her father's words, which was a very emotional moment.

The emotion of this scene increased further when it was shown on screen that Mahavir Singh was locked in a room due to the coach's conspiracy, but Geeta did not lose her focus even without seeing her father when she won the gold medal. After that, when Mahavir broke the lock and came out, seeing the victorious moment of his daughters all around while the national anthem played that scene was a great expression of pride and love. The realization of a father and daughter's dream this felt like the best moment to me.

What lessons did you learn from the true story portrayed?

The lesson this movie teaches us is that if you have the goal and focus, no societal barrier can obstruct the fulfillment of a dream. The conventional social belief that girls are not equal to boys or that girls cannot wrestle was proven wrong by the courage of a father like Mahavir. The lesson here is that to achieve a goal, one must ignore people's criticism and taunts, just as Mahavir did when the villagers made fun of his daughters.

Furthermore, it also teaches us that achieving any goal requires hard work and great sacrifice. Although Geeta and Babita initially resented their father's strictness, they later understood how important discipline was when they achieved fame. Their adherence to their father's discipline helped them achieve global recognition. Therefore, achieving anything requires hard work and discipline.

How did it make you feel about the people or time period it represented?

The film portrayed the people of Haryana at that time, where girls were largely seen as inferior to boys, and it was a very difficult situation for girls to pursue sports in this way. But Mahavir Singh proved society wrong in this aspect. He succeeded in proving that there is no discrimination between boys and girls. In a society where gender discrimination prevails, a brave father like Mahavir created a new path for his daughters. He also highlighted that if the willpower is strong, it is possible to overcome any obstacle and fulfill one's dreams.
