"SC-S28/W2-Movie Highlights|Voices unheard | The Boy who Harnessed The Wind
Hello Steemians,
I watched "The Boy who Harnessed The Wind" , produced by Andrea Calderwood and Gail Egan and directed by Chiwete Ejiofor, who also wrote the screenplay on Netflix in 2020.
Chiwete Ejiofor who has written the screenplay, contributes significantly to this vision beautifully. But this movie is so powerful which touched my heart and I can still remember it. Let me give you my views and answers to your questions:
What new perspective or culture did this movie introduce you to?
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind explores village culture in Malawi, a landlocked country in South Africa. It shows you the strength of community in Vhembe village, where the tension between traditional customs and ancestral beliefs and modern innovation rules the life.

The film shows you the life of Malawi villages and their groups that set to help each other over depending on the government. How their loyalty to the local chief helps them survive during famine and drought.
The spirit of their togetherness, teamwork and family relationships, is unlike what is seen in many so-called developed countries. It shows you human willpower to fight poverty. Through this film, William's windmill project unites villagers. They become a symbol of cultural stability through cooperation.

You need to look closely how their funeral rituals depict the process after death that represents a separation from life. Is it transformation of the soul, or its reintegration into the community, as depicted in Christian and Muslim burials, where masked dancers represent ancestors. That's all so natural.
These rituals reflect male inheritance, the male-dominated structure, and respect for leaders in Vhembe, a blend of Christianity, Islam, and local traditions. The African masks depict the interaction between spirits, which appear during specific moments of grief, regardless of the deceased's religion. This is both unique and powerful.
| Lead Roles | Actors |
|---|---|
| Maxwell Simba | as William Kamkwamba |
| Chiwetel Ejiofor | as Trywell Kamkwamba |
| Felix Lemburo | as John Kamkwamba |
| Robert Agengo | as Jeremiah Kamkwamba |
| Lily Banda | as Annie Kamkwamba |
Did the film challenge or break any established beliefs?
By showing the ingenuity of the people of Malawi, the courage of their community, and local innovation in difficult times, the producer has seriously challenged the comon belief about Africans as helpless victims dependent on charity.

I believe this film will make you think differently not only about Africans but also other third-world countries as dependent on charity. It portrays William Kamkwamba as a problem-solver who creates solutions from scraps without any outside help. It doesn't accept the charitable approach but willing to solve difficult local conditions such as farming and self-reliance during famines, not going for seeking help but shifting the focus onto their own efforts.

William Making his windmill
William's windmill idea brings African youth to a different level, out of illiterate or passive, and show their self-learned skills from library books and how to fight with drought. It challenges them from low thinking to the abilities of poor children, how their knowledge should be used to challenge their urban compatriate and how curiosity and courage can bring prosperity from poverty.

This film doesn't give importance to show a country like Malawi as a state of despair, but this film show them in different light, a vibrant community, family bonds, happy, struggling and a spirit of entrepreneurship. They fight with hardship, avoiding a depiction of famine. It shows their charecter characters with humor, customs, and ambition, and give a view of developing Africans rather than a beate rout of orthodox perspective.
Which character's journey do you relate to the most?
I personally relate the most to William Kamkwamba's journey, which show a perfect self-taught innovation, the strength of a village community, and the ability to transform difficult circumstances into creative ideas despite limited resources.

Growing up close to nature in a rural environment even with limited amenities shows William's life in Vhembe, where creativity, develops from everyday scraps, and brings progress. His determination to build a windmill despite the famine, the courage, the solace that he found in nature and the forest to overcome loneliness.
I appreciate how recently retired William has taken up travel blogging and storytelling after his career. I appreciate how William's, a school dropout to engineering expert reflects similarities, using writing and exploration working with uncertainty and loneliness.
I appreciate how William's acts, such as writing, walking on the beach, or cycling in the park, during deep loneliness when under pressure of community, turning quiet moments into opportunities for growth, and inspiring him to view challenges as opportunities refind himself and feeling more determined.
One message from the film that stuck with you?
"The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" conveys a single message: "The importance of courage and self-confidence in the face of adversity." The film shows how, despite extreme poverty, famine, and public suspicion, his passion for learning and determination to find a solution can change the fate of his village.
