The Alternative Take: Songs of the Week (2nd April 2018)
I love exploring the depths of the Alternative music world and finding new sounds and interesting groups of musically talented people. So each week, join me in my quest as I list a few of my weeks findings that just might interest you. Who knows, we might even share some similar tastes in music along the way.
I should add that these aren't ranked in any particular order.
The absolute companion to a rainy commute on a train is this track. Taken from their self titled debut Olden Yolk , Takes One to Know One is a 8 minute journey into a world of dystopian folk, soothing drum beats and the urge to listen to the rest of this young bands offerings.
This is the brainchild of Shane Butler and Caity Shaffer, juxtaposing the madness of the NY city life with the ambience and clockwork of it.
Stumbled across this on Spotify last week. A fast paced dream pop-electro track that reminds me a little of Arcade Fire but with a rawer edge. Released on the 'Anti-Vibe Music Group' label last October, it's 3 and a half minutes of floatiness, so here's hoping for some more material very soon.
There is a fantastic B-side to this as well named Satorotas , which is simply the title track reversed, but it works just as well.
This is the latest offering from Danish post-punk quartet Iceage who are about to release their fourth effort 'Beyondless' in the coming month. A moody four minute journey through strings and a very tight little beat complimented by the strung out vocals of Elias Ronnenfelt, you just want to disappear into the song.
If that intrigues you, check out the other two singles from the upcoming album; Catch It and Pain Killer.
Well, DMA's are back for their second Album in the coming months, and they've hit us with a good'un. For Now is the very definition of their sound, heavily influenced by Stone Roses/Oasis/Manchester-esque sounds, there's a definite Oasis - Columbia vibe to this one. Though they derive from this sound, they give an edge to it and make it their own which is refreshing.
Looking forward to hearing the rest of this album.
Very happy I found this. Super chilled out four and a half minute effort from another young artist whose vocals both intrigue and excite. A definite funk/soul edge to this one and a beautiful bassline. Will be playing this one during the summer BBQ for sure, and it even fades out at the end which I'm always a fan of.
More Soon.
