Southern Outlaws Band: Honoring Musical Heritage Through Contemporary Outlaw Country
Rooted in tradition yet shaped by real life experience, Southern Outlaws Band has emerged as a distinctive voice in modern outlaw country and Southern rock. Based in Northeast Ohio, the American band was founded in 2019 and has steadily gained recognition for music that values storytelling, musicianship, and emotional honesty. Drawing inspiration from legendary acts such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, and The Marshall Tucker Band, the group honors Southern musical heritage while presenting it through a contemporary lens.
Behind the band is founder Arlis Walker, whose musical journey spans decades and reflects a life defined by service, resilience, and creative determination. Raised in West Virginia within a musical family, Walker was introduced early to bluegrass and country music. These formative influences shaped his songwriting style and his appreciation for narrative-driven songs. As a teenager, he performed in bands and gained stage experience that later led to a major early achievement: performing at the Grand Ole Opry in 1994.
Following that milestone, Walker made the decision to step away from music in order to pursue a career in law enforcement. He served as a police officer in Newton Falls, Ohio, before becoming a deputy with the Stark County Sheriff’s Department. His years in uniform were marked by dedication to public service and strong ties to the community. However, in 1999, an on duty accident abruptly ended his law enforcement career and changed the course of his life.
The accident resulted in severe injuries, extensive surgeries, and several years of wheelchair use. During this challenging period, Walker faced physical and emotional recovery that tested his sense of identity and purpose. Music gradually became a vital part of his rehabilitation. Writing songs and returning to performance provided motivation, structure, and emotional release. What began as a personal outlet eventually became the foundation for a renewed commitment to music.
Southern Outlaws Band was officially formed in 2019, emerging during the early stages of the COVID era. While live music opportunities were limited at the time, the group focused on collaboration and songwriting. The band’s name reflects both Southern musical traditions and Walker’s background in law enforcement, symbolizing independence, grit, and authenticity. These qualities are woven throughout the band’s identity and artistic direction.
Musically, Southern Outlaws Band blends Southern rock guitar textures with outlaw country themes rooted in lived experience. Their songs often explore perseverance, loyalty, personal struggle, and the importance of community. Rather than relying on polished trends, the band prioritizes sincerity and connection. Many of their lyrics draw directly from real moments, allowing listeners to hear stories shaped by hardship, recovery, and shared human experience.
One of the band’s most recognized songs, Good for the Soul, captures this approach clearly. The track reflects on how music, friendship, and simple moments can restore strength during difficult times. In 2021, the song received a World Songwriting Award for Best Outlaw Song. Additional independent music organizations have recognized the band’s work, contributing to growing awareness of their songwriting and musicianship.
The release of the debut album The Southern Outlaws, in 2022 marked a major step forward for the band. The album features a collection of original songs that highlight the group’s Southern rock and country influences while reinforcing their regional identity. It was named a Country Album of the Year finalist by the Rampage Music Awards. Tracks such as “Southbound Train,” “Four Walls of Raiford,” “Louisiana Water,” “Liberty,” “Bullet for Freedom,” and “Outlaws and Bikers” helped expand the band’s audience beyond Ohio.
Live performance remains central to the band’s presence. Southern Outlaws Band regularly performs throughout Ohio and the Midwest, appearing at regional venues and industry events. The group has also delivered a preshow performance for the Independent Singer Songwriter Association Awards in Atlanta. In Newton Falls, Ohio, the band continues to enjoy strong hometown support, frequently returning to perform for audiences who have followed their journey closely.
The current lineup brings together diverse musical backgrounds. Arlis Walker leads on vocals, harmonica, songwriting, and production. Lead guitarist Dave Weilacher II contributes vocals, songwriting, and production, drawing on a lifetime of performance experience.
