NASA is going to perform first supersonic parachute test in mars 2020 mission.
NASA is decided to land on mars with very first supersonic parachute. it helps to slowdown the speed of the spacecraft so it can able to land perfectly on mars otherwise it will be difficult to land on mars without any type of support.
The martian atmosphere is about 5.4 km/s. They are testing this right now.the testing is done on a rocket launch and upper-atmosphere flight last month from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, Virginia.
The rocket is 58-foot-tall (17.7-meter) Black Brant IX sounding rocket which they are launching from the wallops on October 4. The structure of parachute is cylindrical and it is bulletproof. The rocket is going about 42km in the sky and then they will drop them with the velocity of 1.8 times. This splashed down in the Atlantic ocean about 54 km southeast of Wallops island.
Everything they did went according to their plan. Then Clark said "We not only proved that we could get our payload to the correct altitude and velocity conditions to best mimic a parachute deployment in the Martian atmosphere, but as an added bonus, we got to see our parachute in action as well."
