The Great Harvest of 2021

Just in case you were wondering... yes, you're looking at a watermelon, a tiny potato and a massive eggplant!

Where do we start... The year is no longer 2020, which despite the world being flipped upside down, was one of my favorite years EVER, I was home most of the time! 2021, I worked through the spring and summer, and that led me to neglect our garden... We also had a lot more rain than is usual, which wasn't good for crops, they don't like drowning any more then you and me.

We had started so many tomato be plants from seed. To give you a quick background, I have a special variety of tomatoes I'm working on that don't really need watering. Those plants didn't do so well through this rainy year. We harvested a handful of tomatoes only, and they were nothing to rant about really!

The herb spiral was left to do its thing all by its lonesome... The perennials came back. Oregano, lemon balm, marjoram, lavender, and poison ivy, though a bit crowded, I found time (right before it was loo late) to harvest a few handfuls of the good herbs to dry for later use. I did manage to pull the poison ivy out, I don't want that stuff taking over.

Time wasn't on our side this year, we bought a house close to the land we want to build a community on. We couldn't build a house on it yet, there were too many uncertainties in the mix. Between the price of materials going up, and supply not always available these days, we didn't want to be left without a home before winter started. Looking back, it was a good decision, we're getting slammed with ice storms and crazy low temperatures this season!

And so we moved away from our garden... we're just a 10 minute drive, but between work, school pick ups and having to do repairs inside our new home, you can imagine where our spare time went.

Another thing that didn't happen this year is my kratky garden... last winter, we had fresh lettuce, and arugula. It was my first time playing around with hydroponics, and this system is pretty much passive except for the grow lights, though they're on a timer. It's not too late we can have that system going all year and maybe even start a micro-greens operation, we do have a good size basement now!

We could have dozens of these buckets leying around down there! We'd have salads for the whole neighborhood 😁.

I do have a plan for a garden this year in our new yard. I'm just not sure how to shape it.. I woul deventually like to have a small food forest. It's a blank slate and there's lots of sun exposure, and we have running water now! So yeah, we're gonna garden again!!!
