The Diary Game: [9/8/2026]The Day A Farmer Lost A Finger While Catching A Cassava Thief.
Good day my lovely fellow steemians around the globe how are you doing welcome to another diary session with me at yours truly @jay9345 and today i will be sharing with you an experience i had in the farm.
This happened in 2023, when I was managing a millet demonstration plot for some Turkish clients.
There was a farmer from Okotikpa named Adamu whose cassava farm was close to mine. Adamu was a very strong man—well built, with massive muscles. Everyone around knew him.
One morning, as he was heading to his farm, he met a man in the act of harvesting his cassava.
This wasn't someone taking one or two tubers. The thief was harvesting enough cassava to fill an entire pickup van.
Adamu immediately confronted him.
What followed was a fierce struggle.
The thief had no intention of surrendering. He knew that if he was caught, he would face serious consequences, so he fought with everything he had.
At one point, he swung a cutlass straight at Adamu's forehead.
Fortunately, Adamu managed to block the blow with his hand.
But the cutlass sliced through one of his fingers.
Even after losing a finger, Adamu refused to give up. He overpowered the thief, although he suffered multiple cutlass wounds during the fight.
His cries for help attracted nearby farmers, who rushed to the scene.
Together, they restrained the thief and handed him over to the village vigilante.
Adamu, however, was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
The Lesson
Many people think catching a thief is easy.
It isn't.
A cornered thief can become extremely dangerous because, in that moment, escaping is their only goal. They may use cutlasses, knives, sticks, or any weapon available.
If you ever meet someone stealing from your farm:
- Put your safety first.
- Avoid confronting an armed thief alone.
- Raise an alarm immediately so nearby farmers can help.
- If possible, observe from a safe distance and report the incident to the community vigilante or security agencies.
- No harvest is worth losing your life over.
Crops can be replanted.
A life cannot be replaced.
Stay vigilant, but always make safety your first priority.
