What a poor drainage system can do to your environment and your crops.

It's been a really long rainy season in Ghana and I can't remember a single week for about 4 months now where we didn't have rain.
Some times it's little rain and sometimes it's a heavy one and we had heavy rains since last night. Although it has come down now, it has a way of exposing just how good or bad our drainage system is.

As I made mention of in my video, I currently reside in the second floor of a high rise apartment building and the undeveloped home that I am about to show you is located next to my residence.

Pretty decent apartment but next to it, is a very under developed place.

I have actually intended to talk about this little plantation they had there.

I believe that even without asking, I can surely bet that none of the neighbors had intended to have the plantains growing here.

The plants just flourished on their own and because of the richness of the soil, they thrived. You can guess who will be harvesting those plantains once they ripen up fully. It will be the owners or the tenants of that property.

I came to my current place of residence one month ago and in my opinion, they are very lucky that we don't experience heavy rains here which might cause floods and wash away the houses like what happens in other parts of the world.

This property would definitely fall in the category of flood zones.

Now, when it comes to the plantain, the thing is that the leaves absorb a lot of water. So this would make the area perfect for agricultural purposes.

But have you noticed the weeds that have grown next to the plantains and how tall they have become.

This kind of grass grows only in the places where there is too much water. It proves that I wasn't lying when I was saying that it has been raining for months now.

The trouble with the plantains during this period is that they begin to rot quickly due to the wet soil. Most of the yards in the region have this issue because the concrete blocks the soil.

The landlords build without any proper drainage systems in place and the food crops pay a price for this bad planning.

So even though the rains are good for your crops, the poor compound design ruins the soil.

For everyone on Steemit who reads or watches my video, if you have any plans of planting crops in your yard or your backyard, you should first take a look at the layout plan of your land and drainage system in place.
