Todays adventure is a hike to the Devil's Chair!

Steembar.jpg

We drove up through the Cajon pass into the High Desert and over to the Devil's Punchbowl county park at the foot of the northern slopes of the San Gabriel mountains. We started our hike from the nature center and the trail quickly climbed up onto the pine forested mountain slopes overlooking the rock formations of the Punchbowl.

We crossed a small stream and continued traversing along the mountain side far above the Punchbowl getting occasional views through the trees. Then the trail suddenly began to drop steeply. It dropped us over 300 feet down ending at our destination... the Devil's Chair! The Devil's chair is a narrow ridge with cliffs on all sides that leads out to a small plateau that is perched at the end of the ridge overlooking the eastern side of the Devil's Punchbowl. It sticks way out on it's own providing a really incredible 360 degree view! It was really quite impressive.

After having a lunch break and enjoying the great views we started hiking back. We had to climb back up that 300 foot drop in the trail, but after that it was just a nice easy cruise back down to the Nature Center where we had started the hike. Coming in at about 6.5 miles in total. We took a few minutes and checked out some of the cool animals and other interesting exhibits at the nature center and then headed home. Wrapping up another fun adventure in the mountains of California!

That's a awesome looking hike.. and at only 6.5 miles I could probably make it all the way through.. after many 420 stops of course..

Ya it's a great hike. And with it being not to long and not to steep it's good for just about anybody. And the scenery is awesome!

You ever go hiking?... You ever go hiking on weeeeed? lol!

Sweet!! Thanks @ethandsmith. That is way cool!

You're welcome! I really enjoyed this post. My wife and I like to go hiking in various places. I have a cousin who lives in LA, so perhaps I can go hike this spot if I'm able to go visit her!

whoa wtf! I never even knew that was up there!

So the views are looking out towards the Mojave? Is this on the San Andreas?

The Devil's Punchbowl is super cool! It's kinda like Mormon rocks or Vasquez rocks, but way better.

Yes, the views are looking north across the Mojave.

It's not right on the San Andreas fault but it's pretty close to it and it is formed from the movement of the faults. Here's a really interesting video where the park superintendent explains it all really well -

Awesome video! I love the geology of California and the West. So much going on producing amazing landscapes and gems and minerals for us! Thanks for sharing that.

Need to go back there again that was a great hike.

Sometime when you're hanging out at Quentin's place maybe. You know the Punchbowl isn't very far from there!

Wow loved your post, my friend. The pictures are truly amazing. It seems like you had amazing day hiking and enjoying the fresh air. It probably makes you forget it is 6.5 miles hike up the hill. The beauty of nature can have this kind of effect on you. :)

Thank you for sharing your life adventure with us my friend. And thank you for joining our little discord group. Looking forward to the next post from you. Have an amazing day. :)

6.5 miles is actually a pretty short hike for me, I enjoy the physical challenge as well as the beauty of the mountains. This was a perfect day for a hike. Sunny, but not to hot.

Thanks for checking out my post! It was good to meet you in the group the other day. You'll be seeing more of me there.

Whoa. I wonder how many lives the Devil's Chair has taken. I already know you would, but I also wonder who would go out there without the chain railings. Not me.

The whole time I was thinking how much cooler it would be without the railings. lol!

This is one amazing adventure, for sure! The views from the Devil Chair are indeed mesmerizing. Thank you for sharing with us here :)

Gorgeous shots, @derekrichardson! I have to say, the photos of the view from The Devil's Chair are amazing, but that one of the chair itself... I got a little weak-kneed (heights and I do not get along - LOL). But that means you captured how impressive it is!

Thanks @traciyork! The Devil's Chair is definitely not for those with acrophobia. lol. My uncle was on this hike and he gets a bit nervous with heights. Needless to say he was very glad that there was a railing. Me, on the other hand. Thought it would of been even cooler without a railing!

EEK! 😨

I'm with your uncle - LOL!
