Did you know there were glowing worms living in New Zeland and Australian caves.

in #nature7 years ago

The glow worm isn't a worm at all, but the larvae or maggot of a mosquito-like fly. Only three glow worms have been described in Australia . Arachnocampa flava is a species endemic to Queensland. Glow worms can be found in shady, protected places with high humidity..waitomo-glowworm-caves-1.jpgImmediately on hatching from the egg, the larvae emit a light, build a nest, put down lines and feed. Sticky substances on the lines trap insects and these are drawn up and devoured. ... Instead it uses this time to mate and lay eggs. The glowworms found in the Waitomo Glowworm Caves is a species unique to New Zealand..hanging-glowworms-waitmoto-cave-new-zealand.ngsversion.1475778615251.adapt.1190.1.jpg
