Achievement 2 @alimtutorial Task : Basic Security on Steem
Made by Canva We use locks and keys in our daily lives to protect our valuables, such as our home or bank lockers. Similarly, it is very important to protect our digital assets, especially the valuable information and tokens of our Steemit account. A Steemit account is your personal digital vault, and its keys are the main tool to protect that vault. In this context, I am sharing my personal experiences and strategies with you.
Question 1: Recovering and saving all the keys of my Steemit account
On the first day of joining Steemit, I was given a secure file, which included all the secret keys of my account. This file also clearly mentioned the usage of each key, which helped me know when and which key is the safest to use. These keys are:
| Key | use of key |
|---|---|
| Posting Key: | For daily use. |
| Active Key: | For wallet transactions. |
| Memo Key: | For decrypting private messages. |
| Owner Key: | Most important for account recovery. |
| Master Password: | The password used to create the primary key file. |
The first and foremost step is to store all these keys carefully.
Question 2: What are the functions and risk management of each key? |
|---|
Each Steemit key has its own role and limitations. Knowing how to use them properly is essential to ensure security.
Posting Key: This can be called my daily password. It allows me to write new posts, comment, and vote on other people's content. Since it is used only for social activities, this key is relatively low-risk and is used frequently.
Active Key: This is my key for financial transactions. Transferring Steem and SBD, powering up, delegating Steem power, and sending tokens to exchanges—everything is done through this key. It is directly linked to my wallet and assets, so if it falls into the hands of a hacker, all my liquid assets could be lost. It is much like an ATM PIN, which should only be used during transactions.
Memo Key: This key is used to decrypt encrypted messages associated with private transactions.
Owner Key: This is the master key or all-in-one for my account. Using this, I can change all other keys in my account, even the master password. Losing it or getting it into the wrong hands means losing control of the entire account. Therefore, it is essential to keep this key offline and in the highest security. It should only be used if the account is hacked or if the key needs to be changed.
Question 3: Strategy for storing all keys including the master password |
|---|
I understand the importance of the master password. It is not only the password for creating a key file; it can also be used to create a new key file for the future, after creating a new key set using the owner key. Whoever has this master password and owner key can completely disconnect me from my account.
My security strategy is: I store all my keys, especially my owner key and master password, in a highly secure cloud service (like Google Drive/Google Docs). The advantage of this is that even if my phone is lost or damaged, I can retrieve my information from anywhere in the world. This protects my digital assets from the risk of physical damage. Of course, this file is protected by strong encryption and two-factor authentication (2FA).
Question 4: The process of transferring tokens to another Steemit user's account |
|---|
Sending my Steemit tokens to another Steemit user is a very simple process, although I rarely do it. Here is the step-by-step process:
- Entering the wallet: First, I log in to the wallet using my active key.
2 Starting the transfer: Click on the drop-down menu next to the 'Steam' token and select 'Transfer
3 Fill in the details: Input the username of the user to whom you want to send the token and the amount to transfer (1.00 STEEM).
4 Confirmation: Confirm the transaction by clicking on the 'Next' and then 'OK' button with the active key.
5 Transaction completed: If the token is successfully transferred, its record can be seen in the wallet history.
Question 5: How to Power Up My Steem |
|---|
Converting my Steem tokens to Steem Power (SP) is very important to increase the power of my Steemit account. This process is also simple:
1 Power Up Selection: Enter the wallet and select the 'Power Up' option from the drop-down menu of the Steem token.
2 Amount Input: Input the amount of Steem I want to convert to SP (7.00 STEEM).
3 Confirmation: Click the 'Power Up' button, double-check the amount, and confirm the transaction with the active key by clicking OK
4 Successful conversion: This results in my liquid STEAM decreasing and my STEAM Power increasing from 622.141 SP to 629.141 SP.
Conclusion |
|---|
The main purpose of my digital security strategy and regular power ups is to join the Club100 initiative. I intend to stay true to my promise by converting all my liquid STEAM to STEAM Power within the next three months. By keeping my account keys secure, I am not only protecting my assets, but I am also working to increase my influence on the Steemit platform.
