⚕️ Public Awareness: Not Every Heart Attack Starts with Chest Pain!
A Real Case from OPD | Public Awareness Post
Assalam-o-Alaikum Steemians,
Today I would like to share an important case from my OPD that highlights why we should never ignore symptoms such as dizziness and blurred vision.
A male patient, approximately 60 years old, visited the OPD with a complaint that whenever he walked, he experienced dizziness. He also mentioned that his eyesight had been gradually becoming blurred.
At first glance, many people might think these symptoms are related only to age, weakness, or eye problems. However, medical evaluation is important because such symptoms can sometimes indicate a much more serious underlying condition.
After taking a detailed history and performing a clinical examination, I advised an ECG and a Full Blood Count (FBC) test. The reason was that dizziness during exertion can occur due to several causes, including anemia (low hemoglobin) or reduced blood supply caused by heart disease.
When the patient returned with the reports, the ECG showed changes consistent with ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction, a serious type of heart attack that requires urgent medical attention.
To further confirm the diagnosis, a Troponin-T test was advised. The result came back positive, confirming damage to the heart muscle.
The patient was immediately given initial emergency management and referred to a tertiary care hospital for specialized treatment.
What Can We Learn From This Case?
Many people believe that a heart attack always presents with severe chest pain. In reality, especially in older adults, the symptoms may be unusual and include:
Dizziness while walking
Excessive sweating
Shortness of breath
Unexplained weakness
Blurred vision
Nausea or discomfort
Mild chest heaviness rather than severe pain
Public Awareness Message
If you or any family member experiences repeated dizziness during walking, unexplained weakness, or other unusual symptoms, do not simply ignore them or attribute them to age.
Early diagnosis can save heart muscle, prevent complications, and even save a life.
