This Tesla Factory will Accelerate the World's Transition to Sustainable Transportation

in #news8 years ago

Earlier this year Tesla announced the construction of it's Gigafactory 1, the biggest lithium-ion battery factory in the world. They are ahead of schedule and aim to start production by the end of 2016.

The factory will be at the heart of the company's mass-market electric car strategy and will finally make a more affordable Tesla car that average consumers can buy possible. Without this factory they would have trouble getting enough battery supply to make thousands of electric cars.

By 2020 they aim to produce more batteries than the whole world produced in 2013. The graph below is a staggering representation of this.

Aside from the massive shift Tesla will bring to the electric car industry they are also reinventing how a factory itself is built. The Gigafactory is estimated to be "net zero" energy consumer and have carbon neutral operations.

How do they do this? Check the picture below:

Yup, that's right. The entire roof of the building is covered with solar panels, and being that the factory is located east of Reno, NV they should have plenty of sunlight. Here is a graphic representing the final construction of the factory.

It will be absolutely massive, second only to a Boeing factory. To give you an idea look at this graph.

The idea of #futurism is absolutely amazing, and it's incredible how fast technology is moving. Being a history nerd I was always fascinated by the industrial revolution and how it changed the world. The revolution we are on the cusp of now will make the latter part of the 20th century look like the stone age.
