Youth is Wasted on the Young
I just read an article about some young vandals in England who thought it would be fun to knock over a natural rock formation that had stood, according to scientists, for more than 320 million years. The formations, shown above, are part of a popular attraction called Millstone Grit in Summerbridge, North Yorkshire, England. These precarious structure had survived the dinosaurs, wind, rain, floods, earthquakes and continental drift... only to be destroyed by some punks who had nothing better to do.
What is it about youth that makes them want to destroy things? Not all youth, of course. But there seems to be a certain destructive instinct in some that spans all cultures, races and times. Sadly, it almost always seems to be a testosterone fueled instinct.
A few years ago, a boy scout “leader” taking his impressionable young troops on a camping trip in Goblin Valley, Utah decided that another million year old rock formation had to go too. Worse than that, this moron thought it would be really cool to film himself and his buddies doing it, and then proudly post it online. Imagine his surprise when this lead to his arrest and then a fine for property destruction. He first denied that he did it, but then when he knew there was no way out, claimed that the rock was about to fall on them, so he had no choice. None of his lies worked, but he still got off lightly, in my opinion. Personally, I don't think hanging this idiot up by his thumbs until dead would have been out of line But that's just me. Not to be outdone, some young Oregonian MENSA applicants decided to topple another 18 million year old natural monument, popular with families, photogs and selfie enthusiasts for generations, just because it was there. Apparently, they wanted to know what it would feel like to do something really, really stooooopid. The result is, beyond the destruction of a natural wonder and beauty, now everyone must suffer the consequences of their two seconds of glory. Admittedly, I did some stoooopid things when I was young... but nothing that can compare to this level of idiocy. These kinds of things always make me wonder, why is it that youth is wasted on the young?
