The Boring Company: the future of transportation!
One of Elon Musk’s great ideas takes into consideration all the traffic in major cities. Musk is currently planning out an underground “railroad”. The Boring Company plans for an elevator (on the side of the road) to transport cars down into tunnels underneath the city. After this, cars are automatically loaded onto magnetic sleds. These sleds will be able to transport your car at speeds of up to 150 miles per hour.
This ingenious idea will transform the usual 4 hour drive from Washington D.C. to New York City, into a 30 minute cruise.
Why Tunnels?
Some may ask why Musk wants to build tunnels? Can’t we just build flying cars and be done with it?
The answer to that is no… not really.
Cars have thousands of moving parts and one of Musk’s main arguments against flying cars was the dangerousness of this. With so many moving parts, imagine something fell off of a flying car, or a flying car died mid air? I'll leave you to think about those consequences…
With flying cars off the table the next best thing is underground. A couple of the hundreds of benefits of being underground are:
Tunnels are immune to any type of weather.
Tunnels won’t divide communities on land, as roads, barriers, signs, and everything else is now underground.
Under a certain depth, tunnel construction is silent to those on the surface, and much less pollution is released when in a closed area.
There is really no limit on how many “layers” of tunnel can be constructed. We can have four, eight lane loops right on top of each other.
What about Earthquakes?
Many would think earthquakes will clearly shake up and damage these underground high speed tunnels. However, earthquakes don’t really affect underground structures. The safest place to be is underground during an earthquake, as the tunnel moves uniformly with the ground.
Isn’t this the same as a Subway?
Not really! This is going to drag your car on an electric skate, which are much faster than your average subway car. To add, these vehicles are autonomous; meaning they have no driver and will automatically bring you to your destination. This will eliminate any human error and find the most efficient way to get you where you need to be.
Have Tunnels Been Built Yet?
The highlighted area in the red is planned to be the start of the first tunnel or Phase 1. The Boring Company has already filed permits for this project and is excited to start excavation on the 6.5 mile test tunnel. You and I can’t test it, as this first phase won’t be open to the public just yet. This tunnel will be tested in many different ways, some being: Safety, speed, operating procedure, line-switching demonstrations, and so much more as The Boring Company gears up to make history.
Phase 2 is highlighted in blue and is only an idea of what will be on the final plans. This phase will only take place once all the regulations have been met and all government officials have agreed. The Boring Company is looking forward to taking requests from local residents, as they will be an important part of the eventual success.
