Cook was chosen at a ceremony focused on combating violence against women after a series of sexual harassment scandals involving politicians and celebrities.

Law student Mayva Kok crowned Miss France on Saturday evening in a competition to combat violence against women.  Maeva Cook is 23 years old, from the Nur-Pas-de-Calais region.

The 1,76-meter-long young woman was selected from 30 participants aged between 18 and 24 from France's 22 provinces and eight overseas French provinces.

Two months after the scandal of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, the evening in Chatrourou, central France, focused on women's issues directly on television.

The video featured black and white photos titled "Queens Defy in the Face of Violence against Women" before swimmers passed through the sea. "I am free to choose who I want and free to say no, I am strong and confident, I am beautiful," she said.
