At least 40 people tested positive for HIV in Uttar Pradesh state, northern India. This happens after an unlicensed doctor allegedly uses only one syringe to care for all his patients in the area.

The case began to unfold on Tuesday (6/2), a few months after they were diagnosed by an NGO last November at the Unnao District health camp, Bangarmau City. Of the victims, some of them were children.

"40 positive cases of HIV have been found among 400 tested people. If the tests have been done completely, it is suspected that there will be 500 similar cases," said Sunil Bangarmau, a local council member, as quoted by Aljazirah.

Uttar Pradesh State Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh pledged to crack down on unlicensed medical personnel across the state. "The problem is being investigated, actions will be taken against the perpetrators of crime and those who give unauthorized treatment," he explained.

The unlicensed doctor suspect identified as Rajendra Yadav is believed to have been hiding since the start of a police investigation.
