Fauvism

Henri Matisse - Food and Fruit

The post-impressionists led by Paul Gauguin and Paul Cezanne influenced the birth of this movement. At one of the exhibitions in 1905, the paintings of a group of artists caused people to have special feelings, feelings of passion and energy. The French critic Louis Vauxel jokingly compared artists with wild beasts (fr. Les fauves). This name was quickly attached to the whole movement, which did not cease to grow.
Fauvism - the first movement of the avant-garde, unlike all previous teachings, rejected any philosophy in painting. The Fauvists painted emotions, most often joyful. They expressed them in the language of colors. Therefore, their paintings look so wild and rebellious.

In the works of the Fauves, there are clear contours, saturated colors and the plane of the figures. They had the greatest influence on the artists of the 20th century.
The most prominent representatives were: Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck.

Expressionism

Pierre Paul Girieud - Peonies

This is an artistic movement that emerged as the German parallel to Fauvism. Only in contrast to the Fauvists, the Expressionists did not abandon the expression of existential and spiritual meanings associated with the drama of human existence. The name "expressionism" is directly opposed to French "impressionism." That is, the artist no longer conveys a visual impression of reality, but expresses his complex feelings. By the way, the second wave of expressionism coincides with the beginning of the Second World War, and in the paintings of artists there is a very clear premonition of some kind of catastrophe.
In the expressionist painting, characters and forms are grotesque, the colors are bright, and dissonantly combined with each other. Shapes and planes are offset. All this in aggregate gives the audience a sense of the drama of being.
Representatives of expressionism: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, August Macke, Franz Marc, Emil Nolde.

It is one of my favourite paintings but i was sure its tittle is Red Room:) Is this post for the Curation Talent Contest, because you posted it at the CR section which is for original artworks.

I also like this picture very much) I heard about it a long time ago, but the scale of the canvas that hangs in the Hermitage exceeded my expectations. This is a real masterpiece.

You are very lucky to see it in person:)
