Hi Steemit family!

Australia is known as the land with the most exotic animals on the planet, perhaps the geographical location has made some species have developed, and others seem to have stayed in a period before we live. It possesses perhaps one of the biggest diversities of reptiles, almost all poisonous and with unique aspects, today I bring you one of those special reptiles, it is the Chlamydosaurus of King, it is to the south of new guinea and to the west of Australia.

source

Chlamydosaurus , is an agamid of the class Sauropsida, which is scientifically called Chlamydosaurus Kingii, lives in sub-humid and semi-arid areas, which gives it a versatility when living in extreme sites or tropical forests, has qualities of other reptiles such as camouflage changing its color.

source

But there is something that distinguishes it from other reptiles, are its prominent spines that look like a necklace, which forms a body structure called a palette, where skin hangs behind the head and back, are composed of cartilage that opens quickly when under threat of other specimens or predators, these cartilage spines can reach a diameter of 30 cm and resembles a crown.

source

Their tones can be very varied, red in the palette, and body colors such as gray, brown, black or yellowish. In addition, some have spots or stripes. its size comprises 1 meter in length, including the tail.

source

The female is usually smaller than the male, thinking half a kilogram and with long fingers that end in perfect claws.
As some reptiles are ectothermic animals, their temperature varies according to the environment where they are, it takes at least 30 minutes to reach their body temperature which is about 2 or 3 degrees above the ambient temperature.

source

His behavior is totally diurnal, his ability to adapt is amazing, can be anywhere, learning how to manage in a matter of hours, this includes the changes of season, as in the dry season where their activity is almost null and by one loses the desire to eat, with the specific objective of maintaining energy.

source

And of course it is to be expected that, in the rainy season, he is very hungry, so he spends a lot of time looking for food, he is an excellent hunter, his powerful sight is very sharp allowing him to detect the least movement, even to defend himself, and it is precisely when he defends himself in a peculiar way, that he defends himself by lifting his hind legs. Then he whistles, opens his mouth and lifts his collar, to run towards his attacker.

source

Although not everything is aggressive, most of the time he spends in the trees, only low for the breeding season, and by the heavy rains. Although in general, it is inoffensive for the human being and some testimonies of people who have them as mascot relate that they are very tame.

source

As for its diet, the Chlamydosaurus is carnivorous, its diet is based on insects, spiders, cicadas, termites, ants, and small invertebrates. That is why he spends a lot of time in the trees stalking his prey.
Its reproductive period begins in September and ends in October. Females give off a strong smell that attracts many males that gather around the female, another reason to become aggressive is just between males only and exclusively in the reproductive period.

source

Of course, it was to be expected that the male would use the most suitable impression to attract the female, that is why he wears his striking necklace. Both dance in a kind of dance.
The offspring are totally self-sufficient from birth, being able to get their own food, their average life span is about 6 years. In captivity, there are cases of some who have managed to live up to 20 years.
Their natural predators are birds of prey such as eagles, owls, snakes, and domestic cats.

Poisonous and unique sound interesting but scary at the same time lol!

Good to know more about these show offs 😁

So, the crown is used to attract females and to ward off attackers. I wonder what is its other purpose,if any.

I didn't know they whistle 🤔. Another new thing learned.
