The Hierarchy of Racism: The Filipinos at the Bottom
The Hierarchy of Racism: The Filipinos at the Bottom

Racism is a common word in the United States. Whenever there is discrimination, Americans usually see to it as a racist action. When there is a movie about the blacks and the whites or whatever there is an appearance of the both colors to whether a color is above the other one, analyzing it using racism is the first move towards criticism.
In the global view, when Asian people get to be nagged around places in the West, it is still called racism. This time, it is the region that becomes the basis for the discrimination, not the colors. Many Western people think they are superior which Asian people should look up to. When the Americans or Europeans tour around Asian countries, they are well entertained and guided. Asians get to be so friendly at them, do everything to make them satisfy as they tour around. They have to make sure their countries would not be hated after the visit. But when Asians travel to America or Europe, they are not VIPs unless they are rich that they can afford full accommodation.
Among Asian people, Filipinos are the most discriminated ones, if not any. It is the thought that the Chinese people are always better than Filipinos. South Korean people are always better than Filipinos. It can also be said that Korean people are better than the Vietnamese, but these Vietnamese are better than Filipinos. It is some sort of an undebated explanation that in every hierarchy of Asian civilization, the Filipinos come to be at the bottom. Despite the export of great talents from the Philippines, nothing elevating on the pride of the Filipinos happens.

Filipinos are publicly being discriminated abroad. There are many reports stating the same atrocities. The worst is death cases where they got killed by their bosses. Discrimination does not end there. No justice has ever been served to them. The dead bodies were just delivered to the families afterwards without any other step on how to pay for what happened. On the other case, during job seeking, professional Filipinos always end up being caretakers, housekeepers and other jobs that can demoralize them. It seems like their education in the Philippines is useless in other countries. However, there are few who were lucky to obtain decent jobs abroad, but they are mostly not given the same opportunity.
Filipinos are hardworking people. In fact, they are one of the most productive in the workplaces abroad. Many employers like to hire them as caregivers but only treat them as slaves. But they do not let go of the discrimination when professional jobs are concerned. They are discouraged from applying for professional jobs even if they can provide diplomas alongside their resumes. As slaves, they love Filipinos, but as employees, they do not. Some cases also when Thai, Chinese, Korean, or even Vietnamese people are being hired rather than Filipinos. And when Filipinos happen to get hired, they only occupy the lowest position in workplaces.
Aside from slaves, some words such as aliens, monsters, terrorists, evils, ignorant, uncivilized and animals are what the non-Filipinos call them. The Filipinos would probably react to this, but they seem to be ignoring these just to continue working abroad because they only think about the welfare of their families in the Philippines. They tend to ignore bad labelling and make it as a habit to earn a living. The real reaction would only happen inside the Philippines, but when they go abroad, they forget about it. Yes, they are good at hiding pain. They keep on enduring the pain for the sake of living. The worst case is when the Philippine government is not doing something about it. The only role of government is whether to carry the responsibility of transporting the dead bodies or giving psychological and medical treatment to Overseas Filipino Workers who are traumatized by harassments abroad with additional allowances, so the people could always say it has become normal to get killed abroad. It should not happen, but it is happening.

Inside the country, Filipinos are also fighting in a racist manner. Reflected from the US basis of racism, dark-colored Filipinos are usually being discriminated by the light-colored one, so there is no doubt of why whitening soaps are everywhere in the Philippines. By history, Americans colonized the country and act as the savior of the Filipinos from ignorance. As a result, Filipinos started to like white people rather than the blacks. While the Americans in these years imported black Africans for slavery in their homeland and they never treated the blacks as human beings, and they brought this culture to the Philippines, they also taught the Filipinos in public schools how they save the country and the world that they should look up to them including their color. This time, the blacks in the US were not still considered as US citizens.
If one is a Filipino, he or she gets to be treated badly. It becomes worse if he or she is a black (dark-colored) Filipino. The discrimination becomes doubled. Literally, there are really no black Filipinos, but Western people including light-colored Filipinos see the dark color as entirely black. For them, there are only white and black, and white is better than black.
Meanwhile, Filipinos are so focused with the issue of poverty, landlessness, and other economic-related problems. They forget about this one issue that is older than the above-mentioned. Filipinos cannot still progress if racism persists at their own homes. So what if they manage to solve hunger, would the country progress as a whole?
The point there is to expose that there are group of people who are more attacked with racism than the Asians. Filipinos are Asians, too, but when someone is asked who the Asians are, he or she would probably answer Chinese or Koreans. Filipinos are always out of the equation. But when asked about slaves, Filipinos become the good example.

Filipinos are amazing people! I think most people are racists but I try to know the people before I judge. My racism about Canadians and Filipinos is for example the most positive. I feel so sad when I hear what happened to the Filipina's in Kuwait, that's a horrible kind of racism..
Hello @xsasj how are you? You've been hanging around different filipinos everyday and sure that you have understand us very well :)
I worked with some great Filipino nurses and physiotherapists in the US. All very hardworking, highly skilled, and respected. I know there is awful stories but there are some good stories as well.
Indeed, there are great stories because there are also great people around the world.
Yeah, as Filipinos, we should also look to those Filipinas who are proud of their color.
Look at Nicole Scherzinger, because she does not have the pure Pinoy mentality maybe because she is living abroad, she is proud of her color. Other Filipinos who are proud of being Kayumanggi is the daughter of Gary Valenciano: Kiana Valenciano.
That's just one aspect of it. It is just that Filipinos are too nice and we are letting other people treat us badly because we look down on ourselves as well...
Look at what happened when Robin Padilla asserted being a proud Pinoy on Pilipinas Got Talent, he got a lot of bashers. Instead of being proud for putting the Philippines up and educating the contestant of speaking Filipino because he is in the Philippines (for 10 years!) they ridiculed his love for the country. Imagine that.
We can blame it on being colonial minded but c'mon this is 2018, we should be able to realize that we should not let other nations trod upon and insult our fellowmen just because we are kind and hospitable to other nationalities to the point that they abuse us.
I agree that racism should end, beginning with each of us. It can be hard but we each have to realize what kind of thinking we have and how we can be proud to be Filipinos anywhere we go. We should not let other people insult us for being Filipinos.
See how we think we are at the bottom when we should not even be at the bottom. We are hardworking Filipinos as you said. Without us the world's workforce will collapse I say. Hah. I say we don't need to compare ourselves to other nationalities. Each have our own good and bad qualities. No need to say we are at the bottom because we are not and should not be. We must believe in ourselves and be proud to be Filipino. If we are not able to then we should find ways in order to be proud of being one. Like represent the country to a contest or something. Lots of things to do so we can show we are not a nation to be looked down upon.
(Naku nobela na ang comment ko. Lol. Napaqiqil ako eh.)
It's not us who are making ourselves at the bottom but those who treat us with inferiority.
Well then we should not allow ourselves to be treated as such. :)
I'd like to think we are not at the bottom at all. Whatever other people say, we should not consider ourselves as someone at the bottom.
South Koreans study in our country to learn English. Thai people study agriculture and others. Foreigners come here to get educated in our schools, why then are we at the bottom? There are people who think highly of Filipinos too.
I think the stereotypes about Asian hierarchy are partly based on western ideology. For example Korea and Japan have a lot of western influence. It’s also funny how Japan and Korea think so highly of themselves while they are 1) have been militarily occupied by America and 2) are the most “white” among the Asian countries. I find Any Korean pride to be a joke because it is divided between north and south. Japan was bombed twice by the USA for absolutely no reason other than to shift the world into a nuclear Armageddon, and Japan has since been another colony for the USA to enter the west.
It is sad to see people talk down about the surrounding Asian countries. Vietnam was a rich culture. It defeated the French, Americans, the Khmer Rouge, and maintained its countrys integrity despite Americans trying to divided it like Korea.
When My wife said the Filipinos killed Magellan, I thought it was so great. He deserved it. It’s sad to see The Europeans trying to oppress the Philippines for hundreds and hundreds of years the way they have. And then when you talk to Europeans, they act like they’re so civilized. They are the most oppressive, murderous countries on the planet! They cause 2 world wars and tens of millions dead and they say they spread civilization?! They’re so stupid! Everything they say is backwards. Part of me wants to take revenge. I hate the west for what they have done to asia.
I also hope Asia can be united together, different yet united, and form it’s own regional trade zone. Asia is so rich in natural resources. Just look at coconut and how many uses it has. The meat is nutritious, the water is also nutritious, and it grows so easily. The west has nothing like this, except maybe cactus, but that is more South American. Maybe because Asia is so rich in natural resources the people are generous and easy going while Europe has nothing so they had to fight each other and that made them good at fighting and yet hungry to conquer. The only thing stopping Asia from coming together is the western colonial mentality so many Asians have.
I think richs dont matter but how one mixmises the resouces around them.
This. Biggest resouce is our mind we have we are the onea to use the resouces.
While it can be debated whether or not using nuclear weapons in Japan was absolutely necessary, it certainly wasn't for "no reason" or to trigger nuclear armageddon (those were the only two nuclear weapons in existence at the time). The U.S. did not start that war.
The Philippines has more western influence (at least from the U.S.) than any other Asian country because it was a U.S. colony for a time. However, the U.S. did not conquer the Philippines (except when they liberated it from Japan during World War II). And how was Japan's attack on the Philippines and their subsequent treatment of the people there a result of western colonization? The Philippines came into U.S. hands almost by accident as a result of a war between Spain and the U.S. The U.S. did not oppress the Philippines and granted independence soon after World War II.
Korea and Vietnam are more complicated scenarios but those wars were not driven from a desire to divide those countries but to prevent the Soviet Union from dominating them. Personally, I don't think it was the business of the U.S. to get involved. However, division already existed before the U.S. got involved.
I can't speak for Europeans but I can tell you the vast majority of people in North America have no desire to colonize or oppress anyone. While there are certainly racists here (as there are throughout the world), they make up a minority of the population.
It's true that Europeans did much to oppress those in Asian counties a long time ago. They also tried to oppress each other and their own colonists (hence America's independence). However, those times are long gone and the people that did those things are no longer alive. In addition, Asian countries have long had conflicts with each other, well before Europe was involved or the U.S. even existed.
In any event, hating the West isn't going to help. Unless countries learn to get along with each other, the world is going to become a far more horrible place.
Because they are using different methods but with the same motives, which is to acquire the country's minerals and natural resources. I just remember the tons and tons of gold on a boat from Philippines to the US after the war, which was given as a gift because they have few gold reserve.
To the best of my knowledge, the U.S. has never taken the natural resources of another country. I suspect that if the U.S. did remove gold from the Philippines after World War II that it was part of the gold that the Japanese had hidden there. In any case, the U.S. has given vast sums of money to the Philippines in the years since World War II.
I could no disagree with this, you are right. Because those oppressors came in strong first and decided to conquer those who are weak at that time, for what reason, just to improve and develop their nation using our natural resources. Now they call themselves strong.
'Murica probably thinks you're Mexican migrants because of the Spanish you speak, lol. They have a historical aversion to anyone who looks slightly different from them who speaks Spanish.
All people are the same at the core. Most Americans are really good people too. No decent human, fundamentally speaking, is above or below another. The hierarchies are artificial.
As a white man, my advice to you is to not take shit from whites. 90% of their apparent confidence and superior attitude is BS. We are quite fragile.
Sorry, I am not looking down on whites. I have so many white friends here in the country, even very close to me.
I'm with you, I'm actually talking about the racists or at least prejudiced whites who give you sh*t.
:-)
We filipinos need to believe ourselves and let us not allow anybody to step on our shoe.

I have always thought that the most stupid and unjust thing that exists is racism, whatever the type. To the Filipinos my greetings to the great champion Manny Pacquiao.
I think, this is best culture... Good job
