When was the last time you changed your mind?
All too often we hear folks misquote Darwin in saying that "only the strong survive" when in fact he never said such a thing, in fact what his book the origin of species points out to us is that the animals who ultimately survive are the ones who are most willing to adapt. It is not the adaptations themselves which are the ultimate tool for survival but rather the ability to change and adapt which enables a species to survive.
How have we changed in recent years? What adaptations have taken place in recent human history? It's all too convenient to think we've reached the pinnacle of evolution but we most certainly know better than that, so if we are still adapting and evolving than what pray tell is taking place? Where is evolution heading? How will we know when we get there?
Physical adaptations are easy to indentify but that doesn't seem to be the priority for human evolution, we have reached a point where our consciousness is what must adapt and evolve in order to survive. As a species we still use violence to solve our problems, and fear dictates a lot of our actions. Clearly this seems to be the next evolutionary crest we must rise above, that we should exist in a world where we no longer use violence as a means of conflict resolution, and we strive for acceptance rather than tolerance.
We cannot collectively decide to simultaneously take the next step, the process will be the most difficult task set forth for man kind in the history of our existence. Change must come first from the individual before it can happen collectively, so I ask you, when was the last time you changed your mind? How easily can you change how you feel when presented with new information? How quickly can you forgive someone? How long does it take you to love someone?
We have all been wrong at some point and nobody enjoys it but it's OK to loose just so long as you don't loose the lesson. The past is already in the past, don't hold onto anger it will do you no favors.
Take it upon yourself to become more adaptable, more open to changing your mind, and the world will be a better place.
