Starostin reconstructs Proto-Sino-Tibetan*gǝ̆m (“metal”); compare Tedim Chin xam(“gold”) and Lepcha [script needed] (kóm, “silver, coin, money”).

“Copper” [prior to 5th BCE] > “metals in general” > “gold”.
