While I agree with most of what you said,

" assault rifles ........ are illegal for the American public to own."

So wrong. The NFA restricted fully automatic firearms, it did not prohibit them. John Q Public can still legally own one however the process has has more agencies and paperwork involved (ATF $200 tax stamp).
