The Melaka Straits Mosque (Malay: Masjid Selat Melaka) is a mosque located on the man-made Melaka Island in Melaka City, Melaka, Malaysia.wikipedia
The facade of the mosque is decorated with stained glass windows with Islamic motifs. The tower also has a striking and unusual design.
This is an interesting building that has become popular among photographers.
The mosque is located on Melaka Island which is a man-made island covering 40 hectares located outside the city center of Melaka.
The island has been hit hard since construction began in 1996. First conservationists opposed the location of the island where many drowned historic artifacts, including many Portuguese wreckage, are believed to lie.
It has now been buried forever under tons of rocks and sand. Then an ambitious construction project is experiencing financial difficulties due to the global economic crisis.
In recent years, the Melaka state government has taken over responsibility for the project and construction has resumed.
On the drawing board, or at various stages of completion, are mixed housing and commercial units and a number of recreational / tourism projects.
The latter include the Wild Life Theater (already completed), the cable car and the Malaysian Eye Ferris wheel.
Right next to the mosque and nearing completion is the Arab City which is a Middle Eastern-themed mall complete with Dubai-style wind towers. In addition to shopping, Arab City is meant to have an Egyptian Museum, a Moroccan Hammam (spa) and a lagoon with water sports.
Squeezed between the mosque and Arab City is a slipway used by Melaka Duck Tours, a city amphibious tour tour.
