“In the Spotlight” – Milan Jandik aka @mjphoto
Today the spotlight falls on Milan Jandik.
Milan Jandik’s Story:
I started my photographic adventures at around 13 with my grandfather being a great influence. He was an avid globetrotter as well as a very keen photographer.
I first really utilised everything I had learned from him when I attended film school in Germany, and after that, it really took off as something fundamental to my everyday life. When I wasn’t busy filming it helped me massively to keep a photographic eye and develop a deeper understanding of composition.
I got my first gig abroad whilst still being enrolled in film school. This led to my decision to drop out of film school and take on the assignment.
And with this, my travelling adventures began! Like I said, “my grandfather was a big influence”. This particular assignment was a documentary about rhinos and poaching in Africa. This, of course, helped me tremendously to advance my career by leaps and bounds. Subsequently, I got my first photo book contract and the audience I craved for throughout my life.
Nowadays I switch between photography and writing as well as filming. Having lived in the Western Cape in South Africa and having traveled Africa extensively many fantastic photo opportunities presented themselves, but as a commercial photographer I specialise in architectural and portrait photography.
My go-to cameras are Canon DSLRs (7D series, 5D series) but I am quite used to working with any camera I'm offered at the time.
My favourite subject would be the most aesthetic composition of any given situation. If you master that ability the subject won't matter anymore, just the picture.
